Have you found a solution to this problem? If not, I have the info in my owner's manual that may help. If you have a manual, it's on page 54.

My centrios edw8020 dvr records o.k. but won't play dvd on any other dvd systems

If the disc is not "finalized" it will not play on other DVD players. The steps to finalize the disc are part of the DISC Utilities Menu. under "DISC OPERATIONS". Choose "FInalize DISC". Instructions refer to finalizing DVD=R disc, so you may want to try this type of disc first and see if it works. Says It can be used as DVD-Video disc but results are not guaranteed. You can not edit disc after finalizing, only playback.

Finalizing

Use a name-brand DVD, such as HP, Verbatim, etc. and make sure it is a DVD+R or DVD-RW/-R disk only.
It is most likely that the DVD you are using is not compatible.
The disk is still usable, but you can only read it on that player.

You might try finalizing the disc in a PC using IMGBURN or other DVD recorder software. It couldn't hurt...

Finalizing the disk

Finalizing a disc is a software issue. When you start to burn a disc there's a check box that will say something like "Finalize Disc" or "Allow no further recording to this disc". Depends on the software. Personally, I use Nero.

Hope that helps...

Finalizing dvd after recording

I have also had this problem as well, and have also found that when it is preparing the disc to begin with the player will lock up.

I've only found this problem on dual layer DVD-R discs. I've yet to get to the bottom of this issue BUT looking back at the manual there is a section around compatibility and it has the the following statement:

"A 8X speed DVD+RW or greater disc can be played, but
maximum recording speed is 4x."

The discs I am using are 8x which looks like it could be the problem. I am wondering if the discs are having issues with running at the lower speed.
It may be worth checking the speed of the discs that you are using.
