Question about Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 Notebook

3 Answers

Help hey, i am a tech, been doing this for 13 yrs. this is crazy. i just setup xp on this laptop, and it was perfect, loaded all drivers and programs. today i put in an internal wireless card, that was taken from another toshiba, just a regular atheros card, and the screen never came on again. no bios screen, nothing...and i have to push the envelope button to power on now, not the power button...if i plug in an external screen, its perfect, but im not sure i ever see the toshiba screen now. anyway. totally took it apart and checked all the ribbons and stuff... just wasnt sure how the screen comes off.... thanks and let me know. its making me nuts. no warning at all?

I've been checking for upgrades for my 5105-s501 and found the following on the Toshiba web site Check out the change description for Version 1.20 â â â 09-02-2003:

Change History

    Version 1.30 â â â 12-22-2004
    • BIOS has been updated to apply Intel's errata: "A timing marginality may exist in the clocking of the ALU which leads to a slowdown in the speed of the circuit's operation. This could lead to incorrect behavior of the ALU. When this errata occurs, unpredictable application behavior and / or system hangs my occur."
    Version 1.20 â â â 09-02-2003
    • Made a change to ensure the display screen will turn on to allow the input of a registered Power-On Password when a user starts the PC by pressing the button in MP3 mode and opening the LCD to input the password.
    • Made a change to insure the proper procedure to validate instant security when the power on password was being registered.
    • Made a change to prevent the system from requesting an HDD password when the HDD is defective.
    Version 1.10 â â â 06-17-2002
    • Corrected a problem where the displayed images during boot were abnormal.

I do actually see the toshiba screen on another monitor. when i was setting up the laptop, i tried many times to get into bios, by pressing f1. it wouldnt let me it turned out, it booted from cd, so i forgot about it. tried again, and it totally wont let me in.
i also noticed that the fn keyboard commands dont seem to work, and the wireless light on the front is never lit anymore, even if its in the on position. on the keyboard, a few of the fn keyboard commands look like they change the screen to be external, and there is another that i dont know what it does, is it possible that the fn menu may have just turned off the screen, and now i cant get it to go on?
how do you reset the bios, i have left the battery out for days, and it wont reset, and there is no reset hole on the bottom.
is there any way to do it other than taking the whole thing apart again to remove the bat, or change the jumper?

It sounds like the new card shorted something on system board. The fact that the display no longer works and you have to press a different button to turn it on indicates something funky is up, big time.

You may want to try updating the BIOS with the external monitor, and update the DMI string.

If you are talking about 13 files of a package and are confused about the installation program then click on setup.exe to install the program to your PC/laptop.

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

If yes, - DISABLE it.
If not, - you'll need

put it on USB flash drive and press F6 when prompted during Windows setup.

XP OS in Compaq Laptop

Yes, but HP doesn't provide the drivers for the laptop, they only provide Vista drivers for this model.

After the xp setup you would need to find drivers for the computer from the internet. but hp doesn't provide the drivers.

So this might become a headache for you.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Xp Drivers for Dell Inspiron Laptop 1525

Nominally you might get a more accurate answer by going to and entering the 'service tag' number (on the bottom of your machine next to the 'express service code'.

This machine also includes a field in the BIOS setup program; hit the F2 key when you see the Dell logo to start the BIOS setup program.

Windows XP problem

Is the problem you are having that xp doesn't find the hard disk to install on? If so, then your laptop has a SATA harddrive and this is not supported by xp. a custom driver needs to be loaded for sata support, the setup program asks you to press a button in the begining of the setup to load this driver, unless your laptop has a diskette drive, this will be a little complex. let me know if this is the issue you have or how can I help you?

What is this

if you are doing a clean XP install the CD will ask if you if you want to change your partitions.Afterwards it will automatically format the hard drive. Some of the OS discs dont come with drivers you will have to hunt for them on the internet. If you are using a restore disc copyied from a working machine it should have generic drivers already loaded in the disc.
