Question about Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 Notebook

3 Answers

Help hey, i am a tech, been doing this for 13 yrs. this is crazy. i just setup xp on this laptop, and it was perfect, loaded all drivers and programs. today i put in an internal wireless card, that was taken from another toshiba, just a regular atheros card, and the screen never came on again. no bios screen, nothing...and i have to push the envelope button to power on now, not the power button...if i plug in an external screen, its perfect, but im not sure i ever see the toshiba screen now. anyway. totally took it apart and checked all the ribbons and stuff... just wasnt sure how the screen comes off.... thanks and let me know. its making me nuts. no warning at all?

I do actually see the toshiba screen on another monitor. when i was setting up the laptop, i tried many times to get into bios, by pressing f1. it wouldnt let me in....as it turned out, it booted from cd, so i forgot about it. tried again, and it totally wont let me in.
i also noticed that the fn keyboard commands dont seem to work, and the wireless light on the front is never lit anymore, even if its in the on position. on the keyboard, a few of the fn keyboard commands look like they change the screen to be external, and there is another that i dont know what it does, is it possible that the fn menu may have just turned off the screen, and now i cant get it to go on?
how do you reset the bios, i have left the battery out for days, and it wont reset, and there is no reset hole on the bottom.
is there any way to do it other than taking the whole thing apart again to remove the bat, or change the jumper?

It sounds like the new card shorted something on system board. The fact that the display no longer works and you have to press a different button to turn it on indicates something funky is up, big time.

You may want to try updating the BIOS with the external monitor, and update the DMI string.

If you are talking about 13 files of a package and are confused about the installation program then click on setup.exe to install the program to your PC/laptop.

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

Poweredge 1800 server

Hey,

I looked over the spesifications for the poweredge 1800 servers, go ahead, it will work perfectly but there is one problem in the windows XP setup, you will need to insert / load SCSI or SATA drivers for the hard drive With a floppy disk, or if you don't have a floppy drive your going to need to create a custom windows xp setup cd and add the drivers into it so it can start the SCSI or SATA hard drive and finish the install. without the drivers it might not find the hard drive.

Aside from that I don't see any other problems. You should be able to get the drivers, and everything ese from dell site
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/

Actually I looked over the dell downloads, I see only windows 2000 on the list with windows server 2003, and 2008 and linux distributions.

This could be a 2nd problem, drivers might not be avaialble, or work with xp, but we might be able to get it to work.

So two problems, SCSI or SATA drivers in windows xp / windows 2000 setup

2nd problem is in windows xp drivers, you could try windows 2003's drivers and 2000's and see if they work, if not, then we would have to look for drivers ourselfs from the internet.

So xp might cause headache but we might get it working, windows 2000 seems to be supported perfectly.

Let me know how the project goes
Thanks,
Ekse

I am trying to downgrade my new laptop from Vista to XP it is a HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx notebook. When I run XP setup disk I get a BSOD right after it goes to load windows to begin setup. I know this is...

In your BIOS, do you have option: "Native SATA support - Enable/Disable"?
If yes, - DISABLE it.
If not, - you'll need http://downloadcenter.intel.com/license_agr.aspx?url=/17412/eng/IATA88ENU.exe&ProductID=2800&agr=Y&sType=&PrdMap=&DwnldId=17412&strOSs=All&OSFullName=All+Operating+Systems&lang=eng

put it on USB flash drive and press F6 when prompted during Windows setup.

Xp Drivers for Dell Inspiron Laptop 1525

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1525&os=WLH&osl=en

Nominally you might get a more accurate answer by going to support.dell.com and entering the 'service tag' number (on the bottom of your machine next to the 'express service code'.

This machine also includes a field in the BIOS setup program; hit the F2 key when you see the Dell logo to start the BIOS setup program.

Windows XP problem

Is the problem you are having that xp doesn't find the hard disk to install on? If so, then your laptop has a SATA harddrive and this is not supported by xp. a custom driver needs to be loaded for sata support, the setup program asks you to press a button in the begining of the setup to load this driver, unless your laptop has a diskette drive, this will be a little complex. let me know if this is the issue you have or how can I help you?

I installed linksys wireless notebook adapter driver on my laptop it sayes wsastartup not installed

If the laptop is XP please do this:
Go to Control Panel>add/remove programs. Look for the Linksys Wireless Notebook adapter, select it, click remove. Keep the notebook adapter connected to your laptop.
Insert the driver disc, do not run the set up.
Restart the laptop, drivers should be loaded automatically.
If drivers were not loaded, go to DEVICE MANAGER, click on NETWORK ADAPTERS, select the Linksys, right click the Linksys, click update drivers.
Start the wizard, select Install from a list of specific location.

You can do this if you have the setup disc or the downloaded drivers on your laptop.

If you are still having this problem you can call Linksys tech support 1800-3267114.

Good Day

Change vista to xp on acer laptop

see if there are any drivers in XP for this model to start- if there are not- you are NOT able to convert it back to XP at ALL. Check with acer's tech support to see if it is possible to get drivers or if it is possible to convert it back to xp. Good luck- I'm seeing this problem a lot at the moment and the manufacturers do not care about people that hate vista.
