When the comp is turned on it goes right to a screen that says to select 1 normal 2 logged 3 safe mode 4 step by step and says that windows has detected a registry/configuration error use SCANREG to correct this error but it won't allow you to do anything except select safe mode and then it gives a screen with the words safe mode in the 4 corners but nothing else. What do I do???? I have tried the F8, F1, and everything else I can think of including the restore disk, windows disk, and a repair disk all on start up but it doesn't seem to recognize the drives. What do I do???

Re: compaq presario 5000 not booting up right.
Does the Compaq logo appear when you try to start the computer? Try pressing F10 several times after turning on the power. This should start the "recovery console", which will give you some options for restoring Windows. If the recovery console doesn't start up, there is a good possibility that your hard drive or power supply module may be defective. In that case, you will probably need professional assistance to diagnose the problem.

Boot the computer into safe mode (tapping F8 while it is booting) and select the Administrator account. From there, go into control panel>user accounts.
Select the user account you need to access, modify password (you won't need to enter the current password in this mode).
Did this resolve your issue? If so, please rate it. ty.
Do you have created the password reset disk ? If you do, you can sign into safe mode and recover the password. If you don’t have the windows password recovery disk. you have to take use of the third part utility, you can download it from http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com and the website will show how to recover windows password.
