Does the lcd only turn black when you hit record? Or is it black all the time? If it's only black when you hit record. It is probably set to "viewer" mode, which means you want to hold the camera and look through the eye peice instead of on the lcd. If you look through the manual, you should see this in the recording settings section. Let me know if that helps.

The LCD is black at all times?? Bad wires / Dead Screen / Burnt Backlight. I'd call the manufacturer & see if it's under warranty. I don't think this is something you'll fix yourself.

Hi my sony dcr-hc18e camcorder plays back but doesnt record

Hello,
Unfortunately you're going to need to get some repairs done to your device, the reasoning behind the black screen on recording mode is that one of the many pieces responsible for bringing the image from start to finish has become mis-aligned.
It's either going to be the CCD sensor that has shifted or one of the lenses is slightly off angle and is sending the image off into a wall on the inside of the camcorder.
Estimated repair cost is going to be in the range of $200 USD.
Best of luck with this!

GR-D71, no longer records images

CCD (imaging chip) went bad and require replacement. Not a very expensive repair, but has to be done by professional.

Lens Cap Error

You have a defective CCD imager - the part of the lens that receives the image. Will need to be replaced.
