Remove the TWAIN software and reinstall it. Best if you can use the add/remove software in the control panel. You might want to look in the Device Manager for the USB entry that controls the device and remove that. If you find it open with an error, definitely remove that entry.
You might want to check with Brother to see if they have a updated driver for your 5840.

then on the screen hit copier...
this will put + on the screen touch the + in the 9 possitions it pots up in and then hit reset twice. if this doesnt align it you have to replace the screen.
What error code are you getting? Try to scan again and let it fail. Press system monitor, scan, log. Look for jobs with Result of NG. Highlight one and press details. At the top, look for Result: NG (####). It will display an error number there. What is that error number?
751 cannot connect to server 7xx cannot connect ... 8xx could connect, but error... 801 bad user/pw or firewall 802 user/permissions 899 unknown if successful, may be normal
Check additional functions, system settings, network settings, email/ifax settings. Check SMTP server IP and authentication / encryption.

HP multi units are notorious for scanner failures. It is just a weak component in their machines. I have seen this time and time again. The only solution is to change the scanner out or purchase a different machine. Just keep in mind the notoriety HP has which failed scanners. If you want to venture into the replacement of the scanner the following website might have the product you are looking for.
