I need to convert some mini dv tapes onto my computer, and I don't know what button to push or cable to use. This is for a movie project due Wednesday, and I really need help!

You'll need a computer with Firewire, aka IEEE1394. These cables don't have an end that is specifically computer or VCR ends, but they have an A for Alpha and a B size. A style connectors are the larger ones shown in the picture below.
After the cable is connected you'll need an editing program on the computer. Windows computers can use Windows Movie Maker, Mac Can use iMovie. Once connected you'll use the capture feature to get the video onto the computer. wswift.jpg

AG-DV2000

If you are seeing tape collect inside the unit, the takeup side is not functioning correctly. This may be as simple as a belt change or idler change. This is not a repair I would suggest that you start with. The alignment of the tape is critical to proper functioning. I would geuss that the "link support mech" is probably just the belt/idler assembly or it is a "mode" switch. In any case, this unit should be sent in for repair. As part of that repair, the conformance to industry standards.

Cleaning is a good first step. If cleaning the deck doesn't work, it may need a tape path alignment.
