Question about PC Desktops

4 Answers

Hi, I purchased a Seagate 500G External Firewire HD for Mac back in early Nov. A couple of days ago I turned it on and the familiar icon wouldn't appear on my desktop. Have tried unplugging and restarting but no luck. Have got tons of photos etc. stored on it that I really don't want to lose! Any suggestions on how to retrieve my files? Thank you for your help! Hi, so your saying if I connect this external
HD to another Mac computer it will come up on their desktop and thus be able to back up?
Can you tell me why this would happen to my
new HD? Is this a common problem? Any way to
make it work on MY computer again?

    Thanks!

Hi, I've also got a whole MP3 library as well
    as over a thousand photos.

Any way to make this HD work again on my
computer? It's less than 6 months old!

    Thanks,
    Marley

    Hey Sweet Rascal,
thanks for all the tips. Now will have to
try and find someone who has a computer with
a firewire port! Sure hope it'll work. Will
    let you know!

    Thanks again.

    Marley ;)

You want to recover the photos alone right?

ya ok let me tell you

see Hard disk is also a man made device. and one out of 1000 becomes defective. after all we r humans that who make it. and that is where quality stands.
because of your luck you got that defective one which was one out of 1000.

this is not a big matter to worry about.

if you want to recover ANY DATA from the HDD(hard DISK Drive)
you have a lot of methods.
you can connect it to other system as an extra HDD and try to recover.
if you a problem with even seeing the data in other system then you will have to try some kind of software like STELLAR PHONEIX
but if you have a problem with even connecting that drive to system try few more systems.
but if none of the system even detects the HDD then its a great problem.
nothing can be recovered in that sense.

in that case take it some tech and ask him if he can do anything. but most probably he too wont be able to do anything.
    but give a try

if all this fails then take it segate replacement center itself.

they have a excellent customer service. they will give you a new HDD sealed with in 5 or 7 days.

    thats it sir

    thank you

    wish you good luck

Upgrade hardrive

This could be due to the fact that Dell places an image on the original HD to enable restore/recovery functions. Cloning is possible but you risk the ability to restore to factory condition afterward. Seagate has DiscWizard to do this and Maxtor has Maxblast.

Mymy seagate exturnal hd won't install

Have you looked for it on Windows Explorer, My Computer? I don't think you have to install it. I'm assuming it's a USB external HD and that you plugged in the USB cable to an open slot.

Could not recognize and no spin

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but from the sound of it you can't. At least not cheaply. The drive must be rebuilt to save the data. Your only option is to bring the drive to a HDD Recovery service for a Clean Lab Recovery. Expect to spend 600-1000.

Sorry Again :-(

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS...

mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

Try it out with another computer and see if it's working or not, if not try with a spare usb cable because maybe that's the case or try it out with a different kind of cable if possible like esata or firewire if possible, if still nothing, than bring it back to the shop in warranty, and maybe consider to try to get a different drive wich is made by the manufacturer who did the HDD inside it.
You can find Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtor (Maxtor is owned by Seagate) for soure.
If it turns out that it's an OSX problem than another expert is more than wellcome to sort it out.

I have a iomega mdhd500-ue for about past ten months.when switched on it useually whirls into action but now it is just making a repeated clicking sound and it is not connecting to my laptop

I have a MDHD500-N Iomega external HD that had the same issue - clicking at startup and flashing power LED. I noticed that the supplied power transformer for the unit is 12V 1A and the sticker on the HD enclosure says 12V 2A. I hooked up the HD enclosure directly to a power supply - at boot up, the HD draws 2.5A, more than double what the provided power transformer can output. HD enclosure runs beautifully on an external PS.

Hi-

Chances are these large memory hard drive should be plugin with a USB and adapter of its own since 320Gb is too big and needs power to be able to recognize. But if you find it defective you have a year warranty from the manufacturer, you can call them up for a replacement.

Hope this help. Thanks for using Fixya!

How do I reformat my 500gb external hard drive for my mac?

Well, you can plug it into your mac, and then open the applications folder on your mac(by opening the Macintosh HD icon first) and opening the utilities folder and selecting Disk Utility. Through disk utility, you can reformat any drive to Mac OS(preferably journaled.) so that you can use it with Time Machine, and the MAC OS.

use your task manager to see if it is actually doing anything.Right click the task bar and select task manager,,,at the bottom of the task manager it will tell you how much CPU,Memory, and how many processes are running. You can look at the processes and see exactly which ones are using the CPU.Another way to get to the task manager is control+alt+delete click in that order and continue holding down each key untill you have pressed all the keys, then release all three at the same time.
