Thank you for your prompt help. I set the camera back to default. The first time it stopped again. Afterwards I replaced the USB cable and it downloaded the photos very slowly but finished. The PC continues to operate with 100% CPU load. ?

Re: freezing after downloading several pics
Buy a USB card reader, insert the camera and open it as a drive and then drag and drop your photo's to a folder on your computer.. Card readers would cost about 10-20$. The other option will be a firmware update which i have heard has screwed up some cameras..

Your camera takes a sizable image which could be part of the problem loading it to the card it takes a long second or two. You also may be using a shooting mode that requires a long shutter speed and have the "noise reduction" activated in this case the camera would actually take to identical pictures which would make the exposure twice as long. If this is not what you wish to do then I would suggest setting the camera back to the factory defaults, on drawback to this is you may have to set the date and time again. I was unable to find a PDF manual download for your camera so I hope you have a manual and can access the default settings.
There could be several problems like:
2)Self timer set to 2sec or 10sec
3)very slow shutter speed set
Make it as a 10 or 20 second delay on the self timer .Your problem here could be that the settings are not right. Go to the menus and reset all to original or default. Then set menus the way you like.
You may have a slow memory card, try changing to a faster card, and test it.
There are several programs that will try to recover the data from your camera, or from a memory card. But most of them cost you about $65 to buy the software...
Luckily for you though, I have found some FREE software ;-) The software does cost money! but the free version will allow you to recover lost pictures from a camera or memory card for free., Here is a link that includes a download, and detailed instructions., Hope this helps...
When previous pictures display fine but does not take new one directs the problem to camera mode problem. Some component is at fault in the main board which controls menu functions and display is damaged. For the solution, the main board is repaired or replaced by technician. The repair cost may run between $100 to $200 in US.
