l have Lexmark x3480 which l keep in same situ and only connect to my laptop as and when required. It has same annoying message - cover open - so l cant print but can still scan. It was only cheap about £40 so l guess will not be cost effective to repair.- has anyone any ideas where to get repaired - how much etc. l suppose you get what you pay for as l have deliberately kept it on its own table away from teenagers grandkids etc and havent ever knocked it or slammed it etc. l must have only used it about a dozen times but it is just outside guarantee period.

Ajkill is right, although his description isn`t very exact. Take off the complete scanner part: (back hinges first, then the blue arresting lever at the front), disconnect the flat band cable and the power supply for the scanner part and take off the complete scanner part. You´ll see a triangular part that goes in a slot of the dark grey cover which covers the rest. It should press againt a white lever which itself presses a little black switch sitting on the printed circuit board. If this white lever has fallen off the switch is always in "Cover open" position. To get it and reposition it (if it isn`t broken) you have to take off the dark grey cover which covers all the rest: take off the front screws and carefully lever out the sides with a small screw driver. Good luck with the repositioning, it is very fiddely and to see how and where it has to go you best use a magnifying glass!  But I could manage it and my printer is working now again. And good luck with fitting it all together again without breaking anything!

Best Solution....Don't buy Lexmark products...we have gone through 2 of the same printers...first one the error message was 'Replace print cartridge'..didn't matter if there was a new cartridge in the printer or not....still got the same message...Lexmark finally replaced that printer....the one that was replaced had the error message 'Cover open'....unable to repair...nothing but garbage products!!!!

Possible cause of the error

This can happen if the lever on the cover open sensor is knocked off the switch assembly.
.
There is a small switch at end where printer cover its small switch which cannot be easily seen by you .All need to doo is to locate the switch which can done by opening the cover there will somw small projection like teeth at end of the cover which when closed will go in a small slot ie.. where the cover switch is located>If ur printer is less than year old get it replaced ..try it it may work..

Hi Just wonder if you could help me i have a lexmark x3480 it has suddenly decided to display cover open and is not switching off at the control panel. The cover is not open and sits flush what is it...

It could either be due to a stuck cover sensor or the cartridges in your printer. Please follow the steps below to fix the problem:

1. Make sure the printer is on.

2. Open the printer cover. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.

Note: If the carrier does not automatically move to the center, turn off the printer/unplug the printer from the power source and then slide the carrier to the center.

3. Remove both cartridges from the carrier.

4. Close the printer cover.

5. Rebrick (pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds).

6. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.

7. Close the printer cover and check for any errors.

8. If no error appears, reinsert the other cartridge. Close the printer cover.

9. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear with a new cartridge.

If problem continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

New cartridge fitted still reads low ink.lexmark x3480

Try this... Unplug the printer from power and restore power... also, reboot the computer. if that doesn't work, try reinstalling the cartridge or reinstalling the software. If there is an option to ignore these messages, it will be in the options srction of your printer manager program.

The language on my printer screen appears to be Chinese. It used to be English, but my grandson pushed buttons and I don't know how to get English back. Help-- it is a Lexmark X3470.

How to Change the Display Language on a Lexmark X3450/X3470/X3480
  1. Turn off the power by pressing the Power button once.
  2. Then press and hold both the Start button and the Power button.
  3. Once the screen displays Mfg Menu enabled, release both buttons and wait until the display shows Copies:1.
  4. Press the Mode button three times. All the indicator lights will go out and the screen will display LCD button test.
  5. Press the up arrow (pattlnk_692006_1047-up%20arrow.gif ) once. The screen will display Clean NVRAM.
  6. Press the Start button once. The printer will be reset. Afer a few seconds, the message Language: English will appear on the display.
  7. Press the up arrow (pattlnk_692006_1047-up%20arrow.gif ) until you reach your preferred language. Press the Start button once, then the Menu (pattlnk_762006_1319-menue.jpg ) button.
  8. Turn the printer off and then back on to disable the manufacturer menu (Mfg Menu). NOTE: After clearing the NVRAM, you will need to print an alignment page. The printer LCD will display this while the alignment is being performed.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

X3480 printer.message is saying;cover is open

the meaning of cover is open means --------the cover means.the thing which you lift to remove or install the cartridges.just keep that cover closed.if that cover is closed still its showing the same error.then the sensor which detects the cover closed is got moved from its orignal position.to reset the sensor just tap all the sides of the printer for couple of minutes.mostly the top side and front side of the printer.and then check out the error must go away.if still the same error then its quite possible that sensor is broked as it very very delicate .so it needs a technician to replace the broken sensor.the cost to replace the sensor must not exceed then $5.
