Hi,
As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

1998 GT22DKXGN00 refrigerator freezes, where is thermostat in refrigerator ? This is a Whirlpool

Check refrigerator and freezer temperature. If the freezer is above 0 degrees Fahrenheit it is likely the cooling capacity of the unit has reduced due to low charge or weak compressor. What usually happens is that the freezer is not able to reach the proper temperature and the unit runs continuously. The result is that the refrigerator via the freezer-refrigerator air flow connection freezes.

"This is not intuitive", but the logic is that from the compressor running continuously the freezing air that flows into the refrigerator side results in that the refrigerator will freeze,.

Check the temperatures. If the freezer is above 10 degrees F it is almost certianty the cooling capacity has been reduced.

If equipped with an ice maker the output of the ice-maker will also reduce with this problem

It is possible to have the compressor replaced but not usually cost effective.

Whirlpool S20b American style f/f. The fridge is very cold and some foods are freezing.

Suggest lowering the refrigerator set point to a lower number such as 3. There is usually an indication of normal setting on the adjustments. Wait 24 hours and check the refrigerator compartment again. Use a thermometer to record the temperatures. The meat compartment will be normal just below freezing. If no success then read the following.

One reason that this occurs is that the unit is working near continuously to reach the freezer temperature. Another words the unit is not capable or cooling the freezer to the prescribed temperature. The result is the excess cooling eventually reaches the refrigerator section causing the refrigerator to freeze. The unit will if this is the case run nearly continuously. This situation is counter intuitive. Freezer not reaching set point, excessive cooling over cools refrigerator therefore refrigerator freezes.

The cause is either the freezer door/seal is not closing or sealing the freezer compartment or the compressor or defrost cycle is not functioning properly.

Check the freezer door seal using a strip of paper. Check to see if air is flowing from the vents in the freezer. Using a thermometer check the temperature of the freezer. Listen for and record if the compressor is running or not.

The normal freezer temperature is around '0' Fahrenheit. If no or little air is flowing from freezer air vents look for ice on the back wall. If ice is present it is likely the auto defrost cycle is not working. Attempt to defrost by hand which requires several hours with everything removed.

Check that lint and dust has not blocked the coils under the unit and that the lower fan is running. Usually warm air exits from the machine grill in the front. Remove the grill and check for air flow and debris buildup. Vacuum if necessary.

And unfortunately if the compressor runs continuously and no air blockage underneath would indicate that the cooling capacity is reduced requiring a major service or replacement.

Hope this helps?

Pull the lower front panel off. Inside you'll see a round small timer with a screw slot in it. Turn the screw slot slowly to the right (clockwise) only, until you hear a slight click. Wait five minutes and feel the walls of the freezer, they should be getting cold by now. If so, you need a new defrost timer. Thank you, Dana

My Whirlpool side-by-side model-ED20ZKXBW00 MFG date is 9-94. Freezer portion works great and refrigerator part is now barely cool so I have spoiled food. What could be causing this?

First thing to try is Powering off the FF at the mains supply and leaving it standing for 30 minutes. Make sure that you do not open any of the doors or touch any of the controls during this time. Then reconnect the power and wait for 30 to 60 minutes to see if the fault remains or is cured. Try completely defrosting the FF as despite common belief these units are not totally frost free.

In side by sides if the freezer side is working OK and the fridge side is not working correctly it means that air ducting has iced up or the air vent from the freezing unit to the fridge compartment has stuck in the closed or partially closed position which causes the fridge to not be any where near as cool as it should be. If it is too cold then the vent is stuck in the open position and the fridge temperature will continue to fall and become the same as the freezer, thereby freezing the contents of the fridge compartment. It can also get stuck in another position so that if the temperature is adjusted on the front panel then nothing happens to the temperature in the fridge compartment. The vent, which is usually at the top of the fridge compartment on the side where it joins the freezer compartment, is controlled by a small sync motor and either the motor has become faulty, the control module is faulty or the vent is iced up. It can be come iced up by putting too many hot items in the fridge so the steam condenses and freezes the vent in position and then the motor cannot open or close it causing it and / or the control module to become faulty. Other times it is just old age that causes the motor and / or the control module to fail. If the sync motor and vent are working OK then there may be a fault with the fridge temperature sensor or main on board controller that will mean that the sensor or the controller will need replacing.

I have a whirlpool refrigerator side by side. The problem that i am having is that the freezer side cool's but the refrigarator side does not cool at all.

Please check your door gaskets and in case it is in bad shape do change it immediately. Or even a block in the system could result in partial cooling.

Vegetables freezing

Most side by side refrigerators use the freezer to supply cold air to the refrigerator side. They use a duct through the wall between the two sides to let COLD air come into the refrigerator. That cold air will be blown upon the drawers at the bottom, where you are storing your vegetables.
There are two adjustments - or three, depending that will change how the air comes through. The freezer control will set the base temp for the freezer, and thus the temp of the air coming into the reefer to cool it down. The reefer can have a movable vane that increases or decreases the amount of air flowing in from the freezer, the vane being operated at the command of the refrigerator temperature control. Some have a movable plate that limits the flow of air on a fixed basis.
Set the freezer for 0F. Adjust the refrigerator setting, starting in the middle of the range, until a thermometer on a middle shelf, will read at 40F. Take your time, and check once an hour or so, to let it stabilize.
Make sure that you are not blocking airflow in the refrigerator, as the air must circulate to avoid too low a temperature in spots, such as you are experiencing.
