Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Intermittent buzzing noise

My drive has buzzed loudly since I took it out of the box. Recently it's gotten much louder. I suspect it's the cooling fan, has anyone else experience this? It's under warranty, but I'll have to ship it cross-country, they won't return my data, and I don't have an extra 500gb laying around.

The power supply source is humming--buzzing? what does that mean?

if the noise is new then it would indicate a problem, probably age related and would suggest PSU failure is imminent, I had a similar problem with a charger adaptor recently unfortunately I didn't catch it in time and it damaged my device .....

disabling the fan will cause heat issues , a replacement fan
fron the manufacturer or a universal from tiger direct
will work.
be sure no dust or debris is causing the noise first.

My hard drive isn't being recognised by my laptop and is making an intermittent buzzing noise? I have tried both the power connection and the USB connection neither are loose.

did it come with a cd? if so, did you install the drivers for your Hard drive first before connecting? disconnect your drive, go the the hard drive makers website and download the latest drivers for the model of your hard drive. then re-connect your drive. hope that works =]

Gateway laptop - whirring, buzzing sound

if it's a continuous whirring sound it is most likely the cooling fan. this is normal. as the computer gets older this will get noticably louder as the fan has to run faster to prevent overheating.

Hard Drive Buzzing and Wont work (Seagate External Freeagent 1TB)

You are in trouble!
The buzzing sound is the heads trying to realign themselves at the beginning of the platter.
You could try putting it on a side and hope gravity helps.
But i'm afraid its broke beyond repair.

Buzzing noise

The first thing you should do is copy and data that you want on the drive to somewhere. Then open your case and make sure the drive
and all the screws that hold the drive are snug and the drive is not loose, see if you can feel the drive, if it is more than warm, hot to the touch, this could be a problem. You can run a check on the drive
with windows, go to my computer,rt click on your hard drive and pick
properties, now click on tools tab, click on check now, then only check on,check auto fix file sys error. If the drive is still making the noise, open that page again and check the other option, scan for and attempt. You will need to shut down the pc for the drive to be checked. If the noise is still there contact seagate and check your warranty and see about getting a RMA. If the drive gets louder
or stops working there are a few more thing to try, but this is only
if you had to get data off it,because it means its on it way out
and you either want a replacement from seagate or buy a new one.
Any more questions please post back as everyone is happy to help.

Iomega external HD no longer recognized, makes weird noise.

First see if the device turns up in the Device Manager, if it does, simply uninstall it there, so Windows can re-detect it and install the drivers (again).

Did you also try a different USB port? Maybe it is the port and not the device.

And yes, you will always be able to recover the data from the disk. Inside is a hard disk like any other, so you can always open the box, take out the hard disk and plug it directly into the computer (IDE, SATA or SCSI connection).
You might need data recovery software for that, but probably not even.

Acomdata hard drive Model HD320FES-72

Sounds like the drive has seized spindle... Not good news.
Is it buzzing similar to any of these noises: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
What you should do is remove the internal drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer. If still buzzing then it's a real mechanical problem...
