Carriage hits the right inside of printer - will not print

HP Deskjet 6540
My printer had a paper jam this morning so I removed the lid on the back, took out the paper and put the lid back on.
Then the red arrow was flashing so I though the black ink was out since it wouldnt print and I knew the cartridge was low. I changed the ink with a new one.
Now the top light is flashing along with the red arrow and when I press the red arrow, it tries to engage but the carriage hits against the right hand side of the printer doesn nothing more.

If the lights are flashing along together there is a cariage stall. The ink cartridge craddle is hitting something. Find out what and remove it if doesn't belong there. First of all remove and reinsert both cartridges. One of them may be inserted wrong.

You could try the following:
1.Unplug the printer and remove the paper tray.
2. Move the carriage all the way to the right.
3. Close the lid and plug the printer back in.
Wait until printer stop to cycle.
4. Open the lid. Carriage should return to nomal position.
5. Close lid and try printing again.

Paper jam light on permanently, printer is jammed

Check the following steps for fixing Hp Carriage Jam Error :

Open the print carriage access door. Check for any packing material that may be blocking the internal components. Check for an orange shipping lock that may still be in place on the left side. Pull the shipping lock out, if present, and discard.

Remove and reinstall the cartridges to make sure they are properly installed. Lift the front center of the print carriage access door to open it. Lift the door up until it locks into an open position. Press down on a print cartridge and allow it to spring back up. Lift the cartridge out of the printer. Do the same for the other cartridge. Slide the black cartridge into the slot on the left and the color cartridge into the slot on the right. Press down on each one to lock it into place. Lower the print carriage access door.

Check the print cartridges to make sure the protective tape has been removed from the ink nozzles. Remove the cartridges from the printer. Remove any tape or labels. Replace the cartridges into the printer.

Push in on the tab on the left side of the clean-out door on the back of the printer to open the door. Lift the door out of the printer. Check for any paper jams. Jammed paper can block the printer cartridge carriage from moving. Pull any jammed paper out.

Our Deskjet D4160 had a jam and the paper was pulled out. the paper feed button is blinking and does nothing when we push it. We have restarted the computer, unplugged the printer. What can we do to get it...

hi

1. 1
Switch off the printer and disconnect the power supply. Allow any residual charge to fade away before putting your hands or metal tools inside the chassis.
2. Step 2
Pin down the exact location of the jam. The three hot spots for a jam are the paper tray, anywhere between the feed tray and the print carriage, or between the print carriage and the output tray.
3. Step 3
Take off the front paper tray if the sheet got stuck while it was still in the front area of the printer. If the sheet jammed here, you should be able to see most of the paper.
4. Step 4
Pull on the sheet with both hands and steady pressure. Do not tug as you might rip the paper, leaving a chunk of it deeper in the machine.
5. Step 5
Open the back panel to reach paper jammed between the feed tray area and the print carriage of the all-in-one printer. Carefully remove the jammed paper from the machine.
6. Step 6
Use the carriage access door to reach a jam further inside the all-in-one printer. You may need to move the print carriage out of your way to clear the jam.
7. Step 7
Return any access panels to their closed and locked positions. Plug your printer back in and flip the power switch.

HP 6540 Lights flashing can't print

This indicates a paper jam or the printer is out of paper. Do not clear a paper jam from the front of the printer.

The printer might be out of paper
1. Place paper in the In tray.
2. Press the Resume button on the front of the printer.

There might be a paper jam
1. Press the Resume button. If the paper jam does not clear, then go to the next step.
2. Push the two latch handles on the rear access door toward each other, and then remove the door.
3. Remove any paper that is inside the printer by pulling it out from the back of the printer. If you are printing labels, verify that a label did not become detached from the label sheet while passing through the printer.
4. Replace the rear access door.
5. Press the Resume button.

If the Two-Sided Printing Accessory is attached to the printer, follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the Two-Sided Printing Accessory.

2. Press the buttons on the left and right sides of the duplexer, and then remove it from the printer.
3. Remove any paper inside the printer.
4. Open the duplexer.

6. Close the duplexer, and then re-attach the duplexer to the printer.

Failure to print

Here's what we did: Lifted the lid and turned off printer. Then turned on again. Unplugged power cable from back of printer, moved the carriage toward the middle of the printer. Took out cartridges and closed the lid. Plugged the power cord back in. Reinstalled the cartridges. After the alignment page it worked fine. These instructions are paraphrased from HP website troubleshooting. I don't have any idea why any of it worked, but it did and I'm grateful.

HP Deskjet 6540 Alignment

Yeah, the only thing that can cause this is paper feed problems.

There must be either something loose in the paper feed mech (look for wobbling "tires") or there is still some paper or other foreign debris in the paper feed path.

Probably a small piece of paper (now black with ink and hard to see) stuck in the extreme corners (probably the left side).
