Question about Toshiba Tecra 8100 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba Tecra 8100 will not boot, even the toshiba boot screen not displayed

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 lap top. It will not boot past the POST (power on self test). The Toshiba screen does not get displayed. The power lights are on. The hard drive is spinning and is accessed for a short time (1sec). No video displayed.
If I power up with the F12 key depressed the screen will say "Ready for bios update. Insert the CD and press any key when ready"
I can not get into the setup screen via ESC, F1 or any other F key.
When I power down if I press the power button and let it go I get a series of beeps 1 long beep and 29 short beeps. If I press the power button to power down and hold it in I get 1 long beep and 3 short beeps. I have tried a different memory card in slot A and Slot B. Same problem. I installed an invalid memory card into slot A and the screen told me to place a valid memory card into slot A. Re-seated the processor and still the same problem.

So I know the screen works. The HD drive is spinning, the CD is accessed.
I wish I could find out what the BIOS is telling me. I am sure it is telling me exactly what is wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thats a link to info about bios updates on the tosh website. If you're not getting to the toshiba screen then POST has not completed which means that either there's a hardware problem or the bios is corupt. If you're sure the RAM is ok try flashing the Bios.

Problem is though, to make the bios update disc, you need a working computer.

and, err, It'll probably have to be a toshiba!
(sorry, not my fault!)

Help with a toshiba TECRA 8100

Yes, it should run WinXP. The minimum system requirements to run both Windows XP Home and Professional are 233Mhz, 64Mb RAM and 1.5GB hard drive space. I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 that still runs XP, a little slow, but has run smoothly for 5 years.

The setupdd.sys error is most likely a due to a defective hardware like RAM. Try installing only one ram if you have two to see if either one is defective; it should work for most users.

Try holding the Fn key down and then press the F5 key a few times, waiting a few seconds each time to give it a time to switch between display modes.

Toshiba Tecra 8100 PIII laptop not booting

It could be a hard ware isuse. Try this.

If you have extra memory or removable Ram ( usually located on the bottom under a panel) Try removing it and starting it, with the ram removed. Then try putting it back in and starting it. If it works, it may be bad memory or it just needed to be reseated. Do this also with the cd drive and wireless card if it is removeable.

also try this with the battery, plug it in and remove the battery and see if it starts.

alot of laptops, like computers will not boot if there is a hardware issue.

The Beeping is a code. The number of beeps and how it beeps usually indicates an issue.

you could look the beep codes up on the toshiba website is the support center.

Good luck.
