This is common with most GPS receivers not just yours. It has to do with your position relative to the Sat. and the amount of processor utilization looking for triangulation readings. Basically its a brief signal deterioration on one or more signals so your device is lagging a bit.

You can set the unit to avoid highways. It sounds as though this setting has been turned on. Press the wrench key at the bottom of the main screen. The press "Navigation." If "Avoidances" says "Enabled", press it. If there is a checkmark next to "Highways", press and remove it. Then press "OK". This should correct the problem.
I had the same problem on a trip. Required two fixes and once I did this the unit worked fine.
1. Replace the fuse in the car adapter (reason it wasn't charging when I used it in the car).
2. See the users manual on page 31 regarding resetting your C340. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/StreetPilotc340_OwnersManual.pdf
Try resetting the unit. There is a reset button under the faceplate. Carefully remove the faceplate with the Garmin logo with your fingernail or a knife blade. There is a reset button along the right side. I bought a refurbished C340 and it did the same thing right out of the box. The tech support people where I purchased the unit told me how to reset it.
If the unit is not allowing you to continue to enter the street address, press the back button until you get to the city. Press "Search All" instead of the name of the city and try the address again. It could be that the unit has the address listed in a different city (it sometimes goes by how the post office lists the ZIP code). See if this helps. As for taking the unit apart to access the reset button, all you have to do is remove the faceplate. There is an intentation under the top. Insert your fingertip and pull it forward. Carefully remove the faceplate, and the reset button is on the right hand side.
Have you tried resetting the unit? It sounds like you may have a problem that Garmin needs to address. I would try to reset it first, then make sure you have the latest firmware loaded on the unit. If you still have the problem, it may have to be sent to Garmin for repair.
