Question about Computers & Internet

My connection is very very slow even using a cable to the router. And the wireless connection from another computer using the belkin wireless dongle keeps dropping even though the signal strength states is is very good. Some times i have to unplug the router for a short while just to get the wireless to recognize.

Is there only one computer connected? Is your wireless secured? You may have a neighbor using up all of your bandwidth if the network is not secured. If the computer is completely unplugged from the network, and wireless disabled, does the computer seem to run normally?

Try disabling the wireless portion of the router, and see if your computer connects better via cable. If so the issue is something to do with wireless.

First, if you are connecting to the router with wireless, there are a couple of possible problems. If you are using Wireless B, you'll probably only get around 4 or 5 mbps at best, and even with wireless G, if you happen to have your router set to the same channel as your neighbor or several of your neighbors, it will slow down a LOT and could even have trouble staying connected. To check this, try plugging directly into your router and disabling the wireless on your computer temporarily and run this test again. If it is much better, try changing your wireless channel.

Second, I'm not familiar with this particular model of router, but I've found that many of the cheaper and/or older routers cannot handle the current speeds we see on cable and DSL connections. This could also be a problem with your cable or DSL connection. To check this, you can temporarily bypass your router and plug your modem directly into your computer. Remember this exposes your computer directly to the internet, so it's probably not a good idea to leave it that way. You may also have to reboot your modem and even reconfigure it and your computer to do this depending on your ISP. If it is still slow, you will need to contact your ISP and complain!

Cannot connect to the internet

You cannot connect a router to a router. You would have to configure the belkin as an access point and I don't believe those routers can work that way.

Basically you cannot have a router "routing IPs" when another router is already doing that work. There will be a conflict and the second router will always fail.

Trying to install Belkin router/modem on PC with XP SP3. Setup assistant reports ''not able to connect to router using any network adaptor in this computer''. Any advice very welcome. Thanks RT

What is pictured on your request, is wireless.. are you on a laptop or a desktop ? Most desktops do not have wireless built in, you would need to buy a CAT/5 network cable to plug in from the PC to your Cable Modem/Router. Then you would use IE to access it, or Belkin's built in installer and configuration software. Some older laptops do not have wireless and/or bluetooth built in. You would then need to buy a PCMCIA card or USB dongle to get back in the grove of the router.

Email me if you need more info.

Can't connect with 2nd computer...

1st.  What brand and model # of your router? 2. The router cd should be run only on the computer u have connected to the router with a network cable. Your vista laptop. Is it connected with to the router with a cable? 3. If so, it will be the one used to configure your router for wireless setup. When you ran the setup it should have gone thru Wireless Setup. It will ask you for an SSID. That is a name you will give your wirless network. It can be anything you want. just remember it.  It will also ask you to setup security for your wireless network. follow the instructions to setup a password. write it down. This is an important step so anyone cannot just logon to your wireless signal an start using ur internet connection or gain access to your computers. 4. when u setup your dongle on your kids computer it will search for wireless signals in the area. you will look for the one u setup in the previeous step. you will select it and it should ask you for the passkey you setup. once connected you will have access to the internet.
Think of your router as a private radio station and the wireless usb dongle is the radio. The only way your computers can tune to it is using the dongle and if you know the name of the station (your SSID) and the passkey.

Have bought Belkin 802-11g router for our laptop. Computer uses MS vista. Disc that came with router is not compatible with vista. Am not technical with computers at the best of times. So... how the hell...

any router or disc should be compatible with any version of windows, if you mean the wireless reciever/dongle, the go here for drivers

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=204037

If you do mean the router, then connect to your laptop using a lan cable supplied with the router, then you can get into the router by opening internet explorer, the type in the web address, either 192.168.2.1, or 192.168.0.1, i forget which it is.

This will bring up the password and user name, which is in the manual and then enter your isp's dial up details

Netgear WPNT834 wireless not working

Hi Ashdan

channel 6 is very common with 2.4ghz wireless phones. Try changing the channel to a different one ie. 2 to -5 is rarely used so i suggest one of those. Also WEP is very insecure and easily hacked. If the only risk is people stealing your internet then i suggest you use MAC filter as the most secure way and turn off wep. This will make your router and internet surfing experience even faster.

good luck

smeags.
