Question about Samsung HC-P4752W 47" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Junk Bought the $1,000 TV about 3 years ago in Sam's club. Last October tv started ghosting - diagnosed the conversion ic chip had failed - took tv to the closest Samsung authorized repair center in Watertown, NY. After a 2 month wait and $270 charge we got our tv back. Today after having the tv for approximately 3 months it started to ghost again... and we heard an immediate pop. There were then red, green colored lines in the center of the tv with black all around the outside and another loud pop with a burning electrical smell and then it all went black! Have tried to contact Samsung - all that can get a hold of is a incompetent person at a call center and makes it impossible to get in touch with Samsung directly. Wouldn't recommend anyone buy Samsung. Do you know how to get in touch with Samsung and not a call center?!

The only number that I have is this 800 number for support.
800-726-7864 . Watertown N.Y. Its been ages since I have heard that. I am from Potsdam in St.lawerence county origionally. You are probably going to be better off diagnosing and repairing the set on your own. how is your troubleshooting skills. Let me know if youd like a link for the service manual and some support to try and diagnose that set.

That sounds like the convergence problem I had about a year ago, and like you, I replaced the convergence chips and that fixed the problem. It's cheaper to replace the chips if you do it yourself, but maybe not if you send it out for repair. If you can find an exact replacement board, that would fix it too, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to last longer. The advice I read on replacing the convergence chips in my rear projection TV was that they would last 2 or 3 years and then need replacing again. So you're within that range.

PICTURE IS STRTING TO BEND AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM

This sounds like the most common thing that fails on projection TV's, regardless of the brand. The convergence circuit has two, or sometimes three STK IC chips mounted on heat sinks to drive the convergence yokes. They typically last anywhere from 5-10 years, then they fail. It sounds like in your case, the solder joints on the bottom of one of these chips may be failing and some fresh solder will make it go for a while. If it was my set, I would go ahead and replace both STK chips once I took the trouble to take it apart.

We have blue ghosts with brilliant colors

This sounds like the most common thing that fails on projection TV's, regardless of the brand. The convergence circuit has two STK392-110 IC chips mounted on heat sinks to drive the convergence yokes. They typically last anywhere from 5-10 years, then they fail. A more robust part is now available (STK392-150) as a direct drop-in replacement. My shop has installed these IC's in hundreds of projection sets and had fewer than 1% of them come back with repeat failures. Also check the following low-ohm feedback resistors to make sure they did not go out of tolerance:
  • RK42: 2.7
  • RK46: 2.2
  • RK58: 3.9
  • RK52: 3.3
  • RK50: 3.3
  • RK54: 2.2

I was not aware that there are HD specific antennas. But, that aside, I don't know enough to answer without the model number of your set and information about the antenna, such as how you have it connected, is it amplified?
Best Buy is usually pretty good about helping with solutions. Have you called or visited a store? Be sure to ask for the Geek Squad person/s that are specifically assigned to TV's. Also most of their Dept heads are pretty knowledgeable concerning conversion and the associated problems. My apologies for not having a better answer.

Is the power indicator flashing three times? If so the Ics have shorted shutting the set down. You will need two STK392-110 convergence ICs. You can get replacement ICs at the following link with free installation instructions.

3 blinks means the convergence circuits are shutting the set down. Usually the convergence ICs will take care of the problem, but I would recommend getting the service manual from the following link, as they will provide you free support to help you diagnose why it wont start as usually the convergence ICs wont prevent a set from powering up, unless another component in the convergence circuit has failed.

The biggest problem you stated yourself. You bought aftermarket type IC's. You should have been smarter and purchased the correct IC's for the set. All IC's are not alike, even with the same number on them. Aftermarket IC's are just that. Built in China or are factory rejects. You might get away with replacing the iC's again from a reliable dealer or you might have messed up the power supply in the meantime. Good Luck

Philips Magnavox 51MP392H convergence....

I had the same problem where all of a sudden it started bowing on top and bottom and the colors were bad. I read on here and other sites about the 2 convergance chips so I figured why not try as the tv was going to get thrown away because I could not find anyone that would touch it. Well I ordered 2 stk392-120's (I know others are saying use the 150's or 180's but I just wanted to put the same ones that were in there) I ordered them from electronix.com for 9.99 each plus 6.60 for shipping they took 3 days to get here and I installed them tonight and it worked great. The whole thing took only about 2 hours from start to finish. Here's a couple of tips....the chips are on the far left when looking at the tv from the back, make sure you mark with a marker where the wires go that you have to unplug as there are about 10 of them, each chip has 19 pins that you will have to soder make sure you have a soder ****** to get all the old soder up as you are heating them up, after you are done puting it back together leave the back cover off and turn it on, then go into your menu and go to pictureand go to manual converge and go to undo multpoint and restore factory as this will reset it all. Then if your color is still a little off as mine was there are 6 knobs in the back of the tv by the chips you were working on, find a channel with a lot of colors and try adjusting the top 3 a little at a time till you get the right color that you like. This should do it. It took 26 bucks and 2 hours for me to fix a tv I was ready to replace, thank god for the internet to be able to look stuff like this up. Good luck!

HC-P4752W Blue Convergence??

You can replace the whole board, or opt to replace just the 2 IC's and a resistor or 2 that has probably failed. Lift the chassis & inspect the pins of the 2 IC convergence chips for hair line cracks around them. Inspect the small resistors out in front of the IC's for discoloring or burnt look compared to other similar resistors. The convergence board will cost much more than having the above repaced. Chips about fifeteen a piece, resisters .50 cents each plus shipping. Convergence board $100 plus.
