You're P5PE-VM motherboard does use Realtek AC'97 driver. (ADI AD1888JCPZ). Preform a clean install. Download, install and run the free program ccleaner. Once installed click on the registry icon within ccleaner and run it.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ Than restart you're system and enter the bios. Make sure AC'97 is to [Auto] See page 2-20 in you're manual.
Save and exit the bios. Use the Asus CD and install the sound drivers. Or download the latest drivers from Asus; http://www.asus.com/Search.aspx?SearchKey=P5PE-VM

Good luck!

Multimedia audio controller driver download

http://download.cnet.com/audio-realtek-alc655-ac/3000-2110_4-168843.html
This package supports the following driver models:
Realtek AC'97 Audio
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller
Realtek AC97 Audio
Realtek AC97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA686/8231 Audio Controller
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA8233 Audio Controller
Realtek AC'97 Audio for Intel(R) Audio Controller
Realtek AC'97 Audio for SiS(R) Audio Controller
Realtek SB Emulation
If this driver package is not right

Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours

http://download.cnet.com/SlimDrivers-Free/3000-18513_4-75279940.html
Windows XP/Vista/7/8

it might take some time being a freeware driver solution
Note: it will find all of your outdated drivers

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.
also at cnet
http://download.cnet.com/2000-20_4.html
on the home page you should see a search tab just type in what you are looking for

IE: Motherboard name sound drivers.

Place a tick in either windows software or all software box.

You might have to try a few times to get it right.
