Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Connection drop-outs I have a Linksys WRT54G hooked up to a Motorola SURFboard SB5101i cable modem supplied by my cable provider, and my laptop (an HP nx6320) wirelessly connected to the Linksys, but I have intermittant Internet connection problems. Every few days, my Internet connection will die. I can ping the router and sometimes the cable modem, but not my cable provider ISP gateway. My wireless connection to the router seems fine, just not the connection to the Internet. The cable provider insists it's my router and not their system, and none of my friends with the same service and cable modem have this problem. For most of the drop-outs, rebooting the router solves the problem. Very occasionally I have to reboot the modem too. I upgraded the firmware to version 7.0.4 a week ago, but the problem still occurs. I would love to hear your ideas on solving this. Thanks

    Thanks for your reply fawbushra.

The connection between the router and laptop is not broken, and works fine. It's the connection with the cable modem that's the problem.

As I said above, when the connection dies I can ping my router just fine, sometimes the cable modem but not the ISP's gateway.

I have plugged it my laptop into the bakc of the router with a cat5 cable, but I had the same issues.

I don't believe the wireless part of the router is faulty.

    Thanks

I'm stuck at THAT stage myself. How did you get that combo to work in first place?

Is your laptop wireless adapter a compatable brand. It doesn't necessarily mean the router is bad, you may even be getting RADIO interference from a cordlees or a cell phone in it's path. Do you have the capability to plug a cat-5 cable directly into your laptop from the router when you lose wireless? Check the wireless channels and see about changing the channel on your cordless phone too. May not work, just a hunch.

Good Luck

That is correct. The 2wire (1000-400108-001) Wireless Router
HomePortal 1800HW residential gateway is a high performance ADSL modem and a router. It is NOT a cable modem.
Your router has a connection for a telephone cable (DSL), but since you have cable, this can't work for you.

What you need is either a cable modem (like this) AND a router (like these) or a combined device (like this).

My advice: Do not buy a combined device - get them separately. You can find them used or new on craigslist - don't rent them from your provider. I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem (around 30$) and a Linksys WRT54G router (around 25$) and they work like a charm since 5 years.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Motorola SB5100 and linksys router connection

The only thing that you need to setup on your Linksys for it to work with cable is to make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router.  You will need to plug your router into the modem via the ethernet cable and then plug your neighbors pc into a link port on the router (the cable modem plugs into the internet port)  You will also need to follow the reboot procedure.  Power everything off.
1: Turn on the surfboard and wait about 1 minute for the surfboard to make a connection with your ISP (the link light should come on).
2:Turn on your router and wait for your router to sync up with the surfboard . 3: Turn on your computer. Whenever you plug anything into a cable modem, you must recycle power to the modem.  It "remembers" the last device that was plugged into it, so it's memory needs to be cleared.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but from the information on the forum sites you have a bad router. They have tried the newest firmware but this unit will continually lockup. Here is one forum you can check as see what they are saying: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=299590

My wireless connection keeps going on and off

you have to connect your computer first directly to the modem to test if you'll get the same problem hook to it. if same problem occurs you have to call your isp or whoever gave you the modem to have it reset or reflashed.

No and why doesn't your internet provider... provide a cable modem?? Did you just ask them to enable broadband internet service? So now you'll have to provide your own cable modem.

If what you say is correct you need a cable modem like a motorola surfboard from BestBuy.... then the cable modem plugs into your Linksys router and your PC's plug into the linksys router also.
