Do you mean its taking black pictures? If so, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. Both of these brands are highly regarded in the photographic community, and will probably meet or exceed your expectations. The features on these two camera's are comparable, but the Olympus can record slightly higher resolution and has a slightly more powerful zoom lens. I think both of these cameras should be a good buy. I would suggest going to a store and try them both out, and specifically pay attention to how easy it is to navigate the menu system of each camera and how easy it is to change the camera's settings.

I have owned several Cannon brand cameras (not this particular model) and have always been very happy with them. I would support the purchase of any Cannon product.
