Hi there

If I were you I would take the Projector back to where you purchased it from - because the remote makes out a vital part of this unit and secondly - lines on the image is normally a faulty Mainboard that is very expensive to have replaced.

On our Kodak 650 the remote will not advance the slides

Don, If the remote doesn't work & the projector cycle buttons do, then the problem is your remote. If neither the remote or side buttons work, then it is the LINK that connects the cycle solenoid the the cycle lever. Parts are still available from: Good Luck !!

The advance and reverse button is frozen. the auto focus is also frozen my kodak carousel custom 840H projector is 35 years old. should I just buy new?

You may have trouble buying new. Kodak stopped manufacturing slide projectors in 2004. There are qualified repair dealers that you can send your projector to & get it fixed. What you describe is a pretty common problem with the Carousel Custom line as they age...

Hand held slide advance does not work.

Either the hand held remote control is broken, or the plug the remote plugs into. to complicate the issue further, there were at least 4 different models of remote controls, and while the forward & reverse are universal on them all, just because it indicates "focus" on the remote doesn't mean it will necessarily have that feature in your projector.
My advice is to seek out another remote & try it. If it also fails, then the problem is probably in the projector. I believe you can buy a remote at:

Does a kodak slide projector hook up to a pc

No way! Kodak discontinued its slide projector line long before computer interface. The projectors are mechanical and analog. Maybe you can connect your remote control cord to some kind of computer interface. I know there are dissolve units available that will perform basic functions, but none that are PC-compatible as far as I know.

Doesn't shut off

There is a "mute" screen which will hide the picture on your projector. If thats not the case there seems to be a problem with the remotes/controls fo rthis projector, as my functions do not workcorrectly all the time.
Lastly, the red x in the upper corner meant that you had no signal going to the projector, and would have no effect on shutting down.
Hope this helps
