MIcrowave oven stopped heating - Whirlpool MH6150XMS

My husband called me earlier to say our microwave was not heating. About a year ago the mother board had to be replaced becuae it was apparently hit by lightening. It heated fine when that happened, but once the cycle stopped, the fan would keep running and you would either have to add more time to make the fan shut off or open and shut the door until the fan stopped running. Any ideas of what could be wrong? If so, is it something easy to evaluate and fix? Or would it be best to contact a repairman? The microwave is just a little over 3 years old. Thanks for the help.

Well...since there was so many comments I read about safety and the risk of getting shocked with the high voltage parts, we went ahead and called Whirlpool and set up a service call. It was fixed yesterday and it was a bad magnetron. Of course labor was $183.00 for less than an hour's work. Pretty nice pay rate, huh? Thank goodness the magnetron was covered for 5 years and still under warranty, so we did not have to pay for that. If that would not have been under warranty, it would have cost another $250.00 for that part. If we would have had to pay for all of that plus the mother board (over $200) replacement a year ago...we could have just bought a new microwave. Thanks for the help.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

The problem is in the magnetron, or the inverter board, "if 7 years old or less" and possibily the keypad control board.

THeood is not getting heated and the turntable is

the unit inside the microwave that heats called the "magnetron" has gone bad or the circuits that power the magnetron and turntable have failed. if its under warranty still, send it back to the manufacturer. if not you can call some repair shops and see how much it would be to service it, but its most likely going to be cheaper to purchace a new microwave since they are relatively cheap these days, and electronics repair people are not cheap. hope this helps

My micro wave will not warm items up

You have not given much information, but it appears the Magnetron element (the heating device) in your oven has failed. Repairs are not cost effective my friend. New units are low priced and have many new features. Consider this.

Microwave does not heat/cook

hi

power spikes are very damaging to a microwaves internal parts, it sounds like your transformer and/or magnetron are blown. if the unit is out of warranty I would recommend calling a repairman or getting a new microwave (the transformer & magnetron are expensive and dangerous to work on) also get a small single plug surge protector for the new one.

Whirlpool MH6150XMS Stopped Heating and Turning

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
