Yes you can replaced the power supply but just make sure that unplug all power cord connected to ac power. When you removed the old power supply you must mark the connection with pencil so that when you install the new replacement power supply there is no mistake that cause you more trouble. Bring the old power supply when you buy because the size is important and also the wattages of power supply.

You should be able to replace the power supply. It is usually held in place by 4-6 screws. Unplug the cables on the motherboard and drives. Reconnect the new ones and away you go. A generic supply will be fine if it is of the correct physical size. Bring the old one with you when you go to get the new one.

You either need a cutting edge power supply or an older one The only thing you need to know is are you using mostly sata hard drives or ide hard-drives and does the graphics card require an extra plug Most power supplies have enough connections for most situations. I buy mine at Tiger Direct (Canada). In the USA many buy from NewEgg. Many other after market places exist so prices may vary. I like to have many y connectors to split the power or switch a connector back to ide power wires etc.

When starting computer it surges on and off, If I keep turning it on and off it will eventually start up and run.

You've got some bad capacitors in the power supply.
Power supplies for PCs are cheap. Just replace it.
It would cost almost as much for the parts and shipping as it will to buy a power supply.
Take the old one with you into the shop you purchase the new one at to ensure your new power supply has all the right connectors on it, and that it has enough connectors.
If you are completely unsure how to replace the power supply, have the computer shop do it. Most places will charge a very nominal fee for this ($10 to $25).
The power supply itself shouldn't cost more than about $35.

How can i fix the power supply in my computer

If the power supply in your computer is dead or producing faulty voltages, it is best to replace it as it is not recommended you open and work on the power supply. Look for a label on your power supply that gives a model number and wattage outputs. Search online for a similar model and replace the whole thing. Buying a new power supply is probably cheaper than taking your computer in to a store to have it diagnosed. There are probably four screws on the back of your computer that hold the power supply in place. Make sure to power off the computer and disconnect all the power cables going from the power supply to the motherboard and drives first.

My CISNET desk top power supply fan needs replacing. Staples ordered the part - but I want to see if I can get it faster. Who sells them? Thanks. (I already googled). The hard drive was replaced 4 months...

A power supply is what is called an FRU (Field Replaceable Unit). Generally you don't replace parts on the power supply, it is cheaper to just order a new power supply. Also, office supply stores aren't usually the best places to buy computer parts. Try this place (http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=58&name=Power-Supplies&Order=PRICE). I have bought extensibly from them and have had absolutely no trouble.

Pc doesn't switch on

If it LITERALLY doesn't power on...no lights, no "nuthin'" then your most likely solution is to replace the power supply. If you want to tackle it yourself, pick up a standard power supply from a local computer shop retail store or from places like Best Buy / other. You should be able to purchase this hardware piece with a power output ranging from 300 to 500 watts for approx. 50 bucks or less. If you're not technically inclined (although it sounds like you are if you've pulled the hard drive out and tried it in another machine), a local repair shop should offer to both sell you the Power Supply and install it for under a hundred dollars. Best Wishes, Jim

Computer wont turn on, power light in back goes out when you press power,

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

You will need to replace the power supply unit in your desktop. These can go out due to dust, power surges or other faulty hardware.

Go to manufacturers website and look up replacement part. Go to ebay and run a search for power supply. You will pay 75% less than purchasing from OEM by getting from eBay.

Once you get the power supply in, unplug the computer, open the case and make sure you are grounded. Get a pen and paper and make note of where the power supply ends lead to (this will make the installation of the new power supply less complicated). Double check everything before plugging in.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Wont power up

Helo,

If the power supply from your friends old computer may not fave all of the correct plugs to power up your computer. You system needs 2 plugs going to the motherboard one with 20 pins and one with 4 pins. Besure you have the correct plugs. The second thing to check is recheck the friendss power supply in another machine. Last option is that when your power supply overheated and died that it damaged your motherboard and you may have to replace it too.
