Malfunctioning tape recorder or bad tape?

Hi -- very low tech problem here. I am a journalist and tape-recorded an interview. When I flipped the mini-cassette tape over, I noticed the tape was gone -- it had come off and was completely on the other side. The tape was a Maxell. Do you think my tape recorder is defective, or was it a bad tape? I had no problems with subsequent tapes, then it happened again about a week later. The tape recorder is a Memorex MB2186A.

    The tapes are brand new. The 2 defective ones are from the same batch of 9.

How old are the tapes? Unless the tape recorder doesn't shut off when it gets to the end of the tape, then I think the tape recorder is fine and it is probably just the tape.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Mac =)

    I would try a different brand and see how they work. TDK brand tapes are pretty good.

    Maybe try buying 1 to test it out and see if it works any better.

    Good luck.

    Hope this helps.

    Mac =)

How to convert a tape player into a tape recorder ?

It can't be done. Sorry.

I assume that they won't let you buy a recorder for him. If so, have him wrote what he wants to say in a journal or notebook, or get the prison librarian to help with that.

open the back cover and try to push rew. and fwd. then play and observe what is going on. if there is a ticking sound (eg..tick..tick...tick...tick) then it may be a gear has lost teeth on it. other than that it might be lubrication and belt deteriorating issues. my father in law has a similar one. and thats all that was wrong with his.but to me sounds like mainly lubrication issues, but this mechanism also uses belts for the the auto-reverse by flipping the head block around. This belt
will also need changing, and the head block
removed and taken apart to lubricate.

hope this helps

Sanyo Stereo Cassette Recorder M7300K will not record and record button vey hard to push down

Make sure the tape you are trying to record to is not restricted (unrecordable or pre-recorded). You can look at the tabs on the top narrow band and if they are punched out the tape will not accept recorded material. (you can put scotch tape over the hole and still record but only if you are desparate!)

Look in your area for any good cassette player they all can play the c90 tapes. All you have to do is have a cassette player. Large stores that have stereo dept. would be a good place to look where you can also hear them to see the sound quality.

did you record them on the same unit?
It may be an alignment problem.
If it's the same unit, try cleaning the heads.
There are dat cleaning tapes too, but they beat on the heads.
