Here are few steps which will help you in resolving this issue:

  1. First of all you should check there is no paper jam in your printer. If you found any then remove it immediately to solve the issue of the canon printer won't print.
  2. Make sure you have installed the updated printer drivers. Because the faulty drivers may create the issue.
  3. Check whether the canon printer is connected to the available wifi properly. When a canon printer won't connect to wifi then you won't be able to print anything.
  4. Check your printer ink cartridge from time to time. Because a low ink level cartridge cannot let you print anything.
  5. Now, clear the print queue so that your printer prints the document easily.

Hope you will find the solution worthful.

My Canon Pixma MX850 has two black ink wells, one large and one small. During printing, the printer pulls from the large well first and so when it's empty, I can no longer print in black ink even though...

The small black tank is called "Photo Black Ink Cartridge" and is usually only sed when printing color pages or photos. There is no way to bypass that. Use the ********* ink since it is a cheaper cartridge judging by volume. Sets can be purchased on ebay for very low price. Link below:
