Question about Vacuums

Bissell 5770 Healthy Home vacuum fell over and now will not power on. Closest service center is 55 miles away. I'm very hands and can fix most things, but never took apart a vacuum yet. Can I do this?

The vacuum was working upstairs but when I carried it down it briefly powered up but then wouldn't run at all. I tried different outlets but still wouldn't work.

when you disconnect the handle from the rest of the vacuum you can see the little prongs that connect the suction and brush power. when it is picked up or dropped these prongs are easily bent or "pushed" out of position. this is what causes the loss in suction or bruch power.

How do you get the handle off??

  • horn48 Sep 19, 2008

our brush won't spin and I think it is the same problem. I am still not sure about removing the handle, but I am going to try. If any one knows, please respond!

I had the same problem. The top part of the handle slides off. You will see an electric connection. Remove and reconnect. I think you will see this solves the problem.

Thanks to everyone. I had the same problem. The vacuum was working, carried it by the handle and it stopped working.

The solution worked. I removed the top screw on the back where the cord wraps, pulled the handle out and and slid it back in. The vacuum started right up and works fine.

    Thanks for everything.

Same thing happened to me. The handle connects to the unit and actually plugs in. If you are lifting or carrying it by the handle then you can unplug the unit from itself. Reconnect it and you should be good to go.

There are two cord wraps on the back of the handle, and in between that are two screw holes, you only need to take one screw out, its the one on top of the other screw hole. Completely remove the screw using a philips head screw driver then slide the handle backwards if your behind the machine. Then after taking it completely off, slide the handle back in and make sure its flush all the way up in front that if you look at the front of machine, the upper handle is even to the lower body, then put screw back on tight, that should fix the power problem.

I had the same problem. After reading this I saw what was meant. Slid it in flush and tightened the screw. All is fine.

Thanks for the suggestions. This happened to me, but once I realized that I just had to slide the handle back into place, I'm sweeping again! For anyone else with this problem, look at diagram #1, and then check your vacuum to be sure it is aligned.

Here is a picture which may help you, but if this is less then 2 tears old, then it is in warranty. Maybe if you call and make an appointment to bring it in early, they could look at and possibly have it fixed so you can take it home.

How do you change the belt on a bissell 5770

The Bissell 5770/Healthy Home vacuum is actually fairly easy to change the belt on. The main thing you will need is a T20 screwdriver with at least a 4 inch shaft and a Phillips-head screwdriver. Four of the six T20 screws on the bottom plate are easy to locate, the last two are set deeper into the vacuum near the wheels. Once you have taken all six T20 screws out you will have to release the lock preventing the vacuum from tilting back so you can easily remove the top plate and gain access to the brush assembly. With the top plate off you will notice four Phillips-head screws holding a cover plate over the brush, simply remove them and you have full access to the belt.
