i am getting the 3 d effect also

  • nohavecd May 11, 2010

I am having a similar color separation (3D effect) problem with my RCA R52WH74 tv. I have replaced the FL231 fuse, and it fixed the problem for a few days, but the fuse then went out again. I hesitate to just keep replacing the fuse, as there is some other root cause for the problem.

The DL231 diode was fine when I checked it.

Is there anything else I could check on the convergence board?

Also - is there a way I could get ahold of the service manual?

    Thanks,

    Don

If the convergence option is not on the menu anylonger. thats another issue all together. That is usually a fusible link and capacitor on the deflection board that will cause that to happen. The convergence ICs will also need replacing as the link and capacitor will most certainly take out the convergence ICs as well. You will need a service manual on this issue. Let me know and I will post a link where you can get one along with some free support to help you with it.

yes the ICs are a common problem in all brands of bigscreen televisions. They are located on the largest heat sink on the chassis. However your problem lies deeper than the ICs as the conversion option has gone from your menu thats a sure sign that a fusible link and or capacitor is also at fault on the deflection panel as well as the ICs. This set will need to be checked over to locate the failed components on the deflection circuit before replacing the ICs . Failure to do so can and will destroy the new ICs. To do the repair yourself you will need the service manual. Most shops will insist you change the deflection panel and convergence ICs so I would guess youre looking at about 450.00 to have a repair shop do it.

The problem of your tv is the convergence try to adjust it manually in the setting of your tv. If still same or no effect the convergence IC is already defective. You can find it inside your tv it is connected to a large aluminum called the heat sink it has a marking of stk- followed with a number.Try to replace it.

Soldering or bad IC chips...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I am having a problem with convergence. I cannot manually make it work. Is this a sign of a bigger problem.

This is a very common probem on all projection TV sets. Not just sony. Your convergence IC chips and related parts have failed due to normal wear and tear. One common symptom when this occurs is your TV will look 3D and convergence won't adjust correctly. A repair shop will charge around 250 - 400 for the fix. Or you can get the parts and do it yourself. You can get complete parts and instructions from sites like www.TvRepairKits.com or if you know how to do these repairs you can gogole the parts and forgo the instructions.

Hope this helps a bit,

3D effect where the blue color is a little lower than the rest of the colors. More noticeable on words.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Bow tie looking picture with 3d color mis-alignment

you have lost convergence. First thing to check is to see if you are missing the convergence option in the customer setup menu. if you do not have this option then i suggest reading the article in the tips and tricks section entiltled "the fl231 fuse problem" this is a common and sometime easy repair if you do have it then you might need a convergence power board

This is called convergence board failure. try to re calibrate the convergence. if the re calibration fails, this means your convergence board will need to be replaced or, rebuilt.
