The end of the plug which gets inserted into the cigarette lighter/power port should unscrew. Inside is a fuse. You need to replace it with the identical size and rating of fuse. Check the unit with an ohm meter for any shorts between both conductors. If the unit is shorted toss it and get a new one. If it isn't shorted it should work with a new fuse. Let me know if you need any more help.
You can get something that plugs into your cigarette lighter that actually looks like a plug socket. Where you can just plug a normal plug into it. So you could use your normal mains adaptor in it. I think I got mine from the Pound Shop. So keep your eye out when you next visit. We use it to plug the kids Playstation into when we travel in the car, and they can play it on our dual-screen dvd player.
Hope this helps
Buy an adapter such as the one in this link to convert AC power to a 12V "cigarette Lighter" outlet. http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Adapter/dp/B000EG8RIM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1207184215&sr=8-5
