does not sound good the off balance of a loose blade could have caused the rod to break inside the engine the age of mower and how much use it has had could be a factor only way to really know it to look inside the crankcase.
Check under your mower and see if the blade sheild has bent in towards the blade. This could be your problem. If so take a hammer and tap the sheild back in place. GOOD LUCK.
