Try cleaning the battery contacts with a pencil eraser or some fine sandpaper. Also, try new batteries, anyway. Sometimes you might get dead ones and not realize it.
The user manual for your camera is available right here on Fixya: Fuji S3000
Looking
at the bottom of the camera, starting at the back, the first battery
will be negative up, then positive up, negative up, and the last one at
the front is positive up.
If your Fuji e510 battery system is like the Finepix S3000 or the S3100 take a look at the following postings: Finepix S3100 (Camera power does not come on...) by banobo of Feb 07,2008 and check out solutions #2 & #4, (Mine is #4), Also see posting by "tomawamba for Fuji S3000" and my slightly differently worded solution.(Only one posted). May be best to get camera working before connecting with anything else. Good luck, be patient.
yes ther is no problem using Ni-MH batteries, as they do not have a memory effect they will be better (subject to your charger), you can get the Fuji Finepix NH-20 batteries (wj=hich are NIMH) here - Fuji Finepix F420 battery
Hi. If your camera is turning on with the lens stuck out. Turn the camera on, and without turning it off, open the battery door, and take the batteries out. Leave it for about 1-2 minutes and try again. This process is call power reset. Usually works. Good Luck.
This is an easy possibility, Try using an eraser on all the contacts for the batteries. The ones on the battery door and the ones inside the camera. Try to get them shiny, the harder white erasers work best. If that doesn't solve to power problem, the camera may have blown its power fuse internally. That repair would likely cost 50-60$
