Can you oil the motor on a kirby

No, the motors if noisier than usual run a sealed ball bearing and they either need replacement or replace motor. unless you are at all mechanical the latter is probably the better option as the motor needs to be stripped down to press the bearings on and off.

The left-hand side of the Ball of my Dyson DC40 rolls, but wants to stick. We've inspected everything, and nothing is stuck on the Ball. What's happening? We have had it for less than a month.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC40's ball shell. This sounds unusual as it has a double ball-bearing axle and should roll smoothly in use.

To find out what's causing this we'd need to take you through some quick troubleshooting checks when you have your machine to hand.

If you can call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1-866-693-9766 (US), our experts will be happy to help further. If your machine happens to need a repair, we can also confirm if this is covered under your vacuum's 5-year warranty.

We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Jack

It seems like the hose might be clogged. How do I get possible blockage out? The hose is so long - too long for a wire hanger to reach all the way through.

put a golf ball through it or if that is to big get a smaller heavy ball bearing put in hose and hold hose up until it passes thru

My Filter Queen just started making noise from the motor area, it was very hot. Upon removing the top thing that covers the area where the air blows out, there were sparks and it smelled pretty bad. My...

The motor will need either a rebuild with new bearing, or replacement. Parts should be no more than $100 .EASY project. 20 minutes max fro a pro shop. If you can tie your shoes you can do this one yourself.
If replacing, upgrade to a ball/ ball ( double ball bearing) motor, same height, generally an AMTEK Lamb. A ball ball motor will give longer life
Under the cap you have removed are 3 screws.
You will detach them last. Note they are slightly offset in their pattern.
Open the vac as though changing the cone. Remove the plastic cone by undoing the center screw. Remove the inner filter disc and change . This should be changed every 6 months...
Now you will see three, screws or nuts in a triangle pattern. Detach them. Remove the rubber switch pedal from above .
.Now detach the upper 3 screws and the motor housing will lift off. Voila. Inspaect the cord inside and out for wear at it's socket. Now is the time to shorten if required.
There should be an insulating disc about the size of a coin between the motor top and the screen below the vac handle. You MUST reinstall on the new motor in case of a short in the vac.
Remove the foam or felt "muffler" and clean or replace.
Remove the wire nuts and note the wiring pattern for the switch, motor and power head. Note the motor position versus the cord. Mark with felt pen and reinstall the same.
Do not twist the wires when reinstalling, only twist the wire nuts. Check that they are tight and reinstall in opposite order.
Please post back if tehre is a problem or this helps

Kenmore progressive 300 smells like it is burning

These vacs use Ametek motors which are practically designed to fail. Frequent complaints are a burning smell and louder than usual noise in the canister. The problem is the poor quality
bearings Ametek uses in the motors in the units. They have low-end ball bearings with a nylon "crown" that breaks up and gums up the bearing. Further the fan end of the motor is a bear to get to because of poor (intentionally?) design. With great difficulty I WAS able to remove the fan and housing and inspect the bearing. Since finding a replacement is too much trouble or impossible, I cleaned up the ball bearings and switched the bearings on the two ends moving the remaining good one from the brush end to the fan end where I assume the load is. I packed the damaged one with grease.

Now the motor runs smoothly. I doubt however this jury rig will last very long. It is very irritating to toss a $120 motor because of a failed bearing. Kenmore and Ametek should be embarassed but I'm sure they are NOT!
