My Roper refrigerator's freezer drain freezes up and water leaks into the refrigerator below. I have defrosted the ice in the drain line three times in the past 15 months. This task is getting old. I even poured bleach into the drain to help unclog any mildew or other debris that may be clinging to the sides of the drain tube. What is causing this problem to re-occur? The frig is at a lake house is only about half stocked with food. Also it is only opened on weekends. I always turn off the icemaker when we are not there.

Each evening I hear growling sounds and then on checking water is almost running down from the middle back of the freezer into the refrig. I mop it up.

I have a Roper RT21AKXBN00 Recently the frig seemed too cold - yes, items were freezing in frig. So turned the dial from 3 to almost 2. Didn't help the water problem. Both frig and freezer are set back on 3. Can this be fixed with an adjustment or is it bad news?!

My old GE freezer is having the same problem. I have changed the setting off from economy, turned the temperature level in the freezer compartment lower, and checked the freezer door for a tight fit.

Today i found this series of posts, and opened up the fridge to check to defrost drain, but i cant figure whether my freezer compartment has one. The manual claims it never needs defrosting, and I cant find any reference to a defrost drain in the owners manual. Should I expect this old model (TBF 14DAC, bought some time in 1980 by previous owner) to have a defrost drain? If so, any ideas about where in the freezer compartment I should look for it?

Water is accumulating on top shelf and freezes.
If I lower the temperature I end up with a puddle.
I don't know where the water comes from.

The defrost drain is frozen, you need to take the cover off inside the freezer and there will be a drain hole probably coverd with ice, you will need to pop most of the ice out first then I use a turkey baster and a tub of hot water. Squirt the hot water in the hole over and over again untill it drains. Then just wipe everything down. Problem solved.

I have a side by side kitchen aide Model # KSRA25FKBL00. The freezer was leaking, we keep finding water on the floor and when you opened the freezer the floor of the freezer was covered with ice. I tried finding a solution online but they all seemed to involve removing parts and I wasn’t conformable doing that. I just had a repair man here.
I spent $125 to have it fixed. It took him less than 5 mins. What he did was chipped the ice away. He took a plastic bottle with a small plastic hose coming out of it, filled with hot water and poured it down the defrost drain at the bottom of the freezer. I don’t think you really would need the tube. There is a defrost drain at the bottom of my freezer that drains into a pan under the fridge. The repair man said it defrosts every 8 hours and drains and sometimes it gets clogged.
I hope someone can save some money with this tip; it was such an easy fix. He tried to block what he was doing, but I stood over his shoulder watching.

I cant THANK YOU enough!!!!! I read your post and everything you described is exactly what was wrong with my freezer. I boiled some hot water for my husband and he poured it straight from the kettle on top of the drain and within a few minutes the ice melted and started draining into the pan below the freezer. Walla!!! You saved me $125. Actually you saved my husband $2500! I was going out to buy a new refer tomorrow. THANK YOU!!!! Denise

My kenmore refrigerator has a sheet of ice under the plastic liner, it was also leaking water into the lower refrigerator. Mine doesn't have a cup, it is just a vent lined with sytrofoam. I determined that freezer drain was plugged up. One man's advice was to disconnect the drain hose behind the refrigerator and use an air compressor to blow through downward into the pan located under the refrigerator. I tried blowing through the other way through the freezer drain. I believe it has worked. The outside of the freezer/refrigerator feels cold now, before it was warm to the touch.

The remedy by handybrett was right on. In addition, I would suggest that using a hair dryer to melt the ice in the drain hole works faster then squirting with a turkey baster. I only used the baster to test to make sure the drain was totally unpluged.

SOURCE: Water leaks in from freezer. eventually filling

Maybe, Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer

The drain is clogged. Remove the bottom bin out of the freezer. Once done you should see a trough at the back. This trough will be filled with ice, remvoe the ice. Then you have to clear the drain. The best way I know of to do this is to force hot water down the drain with a turkey baser untill water flows freely. Then mix baken soda with water and pour it down the drain. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/refrigerator-leaking.html

We were able to fix the freezer water leak. We unscrewed the false freezer floor and the inside back panel. Ice had accumulated on the freezer floor and the defrosting drain was frozen. We removed the ice by using a blow dryer then poured boiling hot water onto the frozen drain hole. The frozen water in the drain pipe hole eventually melted and the water released into the defrosting drip pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. Problem solved. We no longer have water leaking into the refrigerator.
