Question about Seagate 160GB 3.5" External USB Drive 160 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Seagate problem Thank you for your answer regarding my Seagate ext. HD. Unfortunately, deskktop PC won't acknowledge the Seagate when it is plugged in an running because apparently the power is not steady or something like that. The blue light comes on when I push the button, however it sounds like it is cycling off/on and the blue light goes off then back on. I called the folks at stellar phoenix and they said their software won't work if my PC won't read the presence of the drive I am trying to recover the data from. Someone mentioned perhaps a USB Hard Drive cable. Do you know anything about that. I know my USB port is OK, because my camera works fine. Since the Seagate is out of warranty, I am considering trying to take it apart to get the HD out and put it in another shell. Do you think that might work? Any help will be greatly appreciated. YF, Ramona (BooKooGuru)

My external hard drive is not being seen by my computer?

1 of 2 things can be wrong...1 (cable may be loose) unplug the cable (ext HD) connected to pc, now reinsert back into pc..try this once or twice...until you see it appear in my computer....if this is not working and your ext HD came with a CD software..uninstall (make sure ext HD is not connected) software, then reinstall make sure your firewall allows it to be connected....this should do the trick...now plug HD back up to pc...do not format your ext hd unless you really really dont want the data on it (format erases everything)

I connect my hard drive with another computer when other computer is running when i connect with them one ic is burn on ciricut board and get burn smell from hard drive. Plz help me in this regards.

if you plugged or unplugged a HD to a computer when the computer is running, you have quite probably fried the HD *unless it's an EXTERNAL HD with a USB connection, which could be more resistant to this type of abuse).
I suggest you download SeaTools from Seagate and check the HD, but I think it;s pretty sure to say that it's gone

Seagate Freeagent 500gb Ext. HD not working.

Hi,
it´s my first time on this topic, but I´d recommend reinstalling it´s drivers, it sounds like it´s stuck there. Or just to be sure it is working ok, the both connections, esata and usb. If any of them work it´s ok. If not, come back, we´ll figure something out for you.

Seagate Freeagent Dropped

Unfortunately what you are describing is a damaged platter inside the hard drive. You may be able to get a technician to recover some data but generally this means the drive is gone forever.

Hi,

You would need two set of driver:
  • motherboard USB drivers;
  • mass storage driver from Seagate for Win98.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,

I am venturing a guess, but it could possibly be your memory and not your hard drive.

Additionally, you can partition and format the 40Gb HD in a second PC using a third party utility such as Partition Magic which would also allow you to verify the integrity of the hard drive

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Windows xp drivers for seagate ST3160203U2-RK

Drivers are not needed for this Ext HDD.
If you go to your Computer Management>Storage Devices, you will have to assign a Drive letter for it to show in your "My Computer" as a External Hard Drive.
Also ensure that drive is set as "slave" and do not connect until computer is booted to Desktop.
All changes will take effect after reboot.
