Gateway FPD1960 TFT works with laptop, not desktop

I have a Gateway FPD1960 that quit working after 18 months. The blue light,(Power) stays on but no pic. Press the input button and displays: input analog. Then i get a beautiful screen for about 1 sec. I have a GeForce 6100 vid card and am running Win Xp Pro SP2. Tried in safe mode with same results. Hooked the monitor to a Dell laptop with a Ati mobility Radeon x1300 running Win Xp Media Ctr. Works fine. Take back to the desktop with same results as mentioned above. Booted to safe mode on desktop, still no picture. Can press input as above and still get nice screen for 1 sec. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks, but this didn't help. Got it going for w hours. Unplugged to put on my desk. Same problem. Next day got it going on desktop. Let it sit for 8 hours. Went on the web. Soon as 1st page displayed went back to its old ways......

Had some bulging capacitors on the inverter board. Replace 3 - 470uF,25v,105c and 2 - 220uF,25v,105c on the board. Still does the same thing. (Color is more vibrant now.) Next step is to replace all the remaining capacitors after i check for dry spots on the circuit board. By the way: the 470uF capacitors were $1.66 each and the 220uF were $1.00 each at my local electronics store. This monitor was given to me. If i can end up with no more than 30 bucks in it ,and some headaches, i will have gotten a good deal. Thanks for all your help. Will let u know the final results....

Don't know about a recall. This monitor i have is only 18 mos old.

I have now replaced 9 capacitors and the ****** still does the same thing. 1 sec nice screen, then off. I will continue trying diff things. I only have 1 more capacitor to replace. A 100uF, 450v where the power cord plugs in. My electronics store had one but the legs came out opposite ends. Have to come out of the same end to work.....

After replacing the capacitors, some needed replacing, checking the two fuses on the inverter board, then pulling my hair out - i did a lot of research on the web and found the solution. (I am using the monitor right now.) I had to re-solder the "dry solder joints at the inductors that power the CCF bulbs. The high heat from the boards being enclosed behind the metal plate had dried out the solder joints.) Ended up being an easy repair. Thanks to all that made suggestions.....

My Gateway FPD 1960 monitor goes on for a spilt second then goes black. I can see a quick message that says "input analog" in a blue box. I hooked up my old monitor and everything works fine.

Good job elbtax, but did you use low esr capacitors? if not your monitor will not continue to work for long.
The solder joints that you repaired actually do not dry out but crack after many heat/cool cyles. this is a common problem in electronics & expecially cheaply engineered/made products.

I got the same problem with this monitor . Except that when I put the moniter on another computer it does the same thing . I just hooked up my old 15 inch tube type moniter to the gateway computer , and it works fine . I figure it has to be the moniter. Any way to find out if there is a recall on these moniters or some sort of addtional warranty from Gateway . Mine is just over 2 years old

Click start > right click on "My Computer" > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > Display adapters > Right click on your device and select uninstall and re boot your computer. Windows should pick up your adapter and re configure it automatically. This method should Fixya!
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

This is a cut and paste from Gateway's Support Sites Peripherals:
Limited warranties and service agreements apply; visit, or call 1-800-846-2000
for a free copy. Service agreements are issued and performed by third
parties. May not be available in all locations. Accidental Damage
Protection not available in all states. If purchased, on-site service
technician will be sent if necessary, following phone-based
troubleshooting. Availability varies. Other conditions apply.

At the minimum (depending on State and local laws) you have at the minimum a 90 day warranty.

Considering that you guys aren't alone with this problem on this model monitor, there probably should be a recall and/or a warranty extension.

i recommend the following

1) if your monitor has a 3 pin kettle type lead, please replace and see if this sorts the issue, if it is hardwired then unfortunatley your monitor is faulty and will need to be replaced/repaired

Please leave feedback/vote if this has been useful

Gateway 900G does not stay on, has power

the_princes, On the rear side of LCD screen that you look at are two each long, straight, cold-cathode-fluorescent-tubes that need to "LIGHT-UP"and provide pure WHITE light to be reflected through the LCD glass panel that you look at from the front side! If you don't have any luck with Gateway providing warranty service or doing a swapout with them, then you should possibly look into having it Refurbished by someone locally in your area. I highly recommend that you go to youtube and watch some video clips of LCD MONITOR REPAIR to see exactly what you are getting involved with. When making a post to tthis site you should always give some "history" along with the trouble "symptom" such as how old is unit and approximate total amount of "ON" time the unit has. I hope you can use the info provided. I'm louie12fix on fixya or Bye for now.

Gateway fpd1960 tft lcd monitor has blotchy color lines across screen.

You likely have a bad 'controller' board, the one that converts the analog monitor signal into Row and Column addresses to tell the screen which pixels to light up, and which color. You may have a loose connection where ribbon cables connect to the board or the LCD panel, but you'd have to take it apart to see.
Likely the monitor part would be prohibitively expensive when you add in labor costs. If I owned it, I'd take it apart a bit and check for loose things...

Make sure your VGA cable is seated properly. If it is seated OK, it could be the start of a problem with a backlight. When a backlight goes bad, it typically shows up as pink/red color where white should be displayed.
