DES4, if you don't have the recovery disk you can still recover your system as long as you know the windows xp key code. Your operating system will be recovered but you might lose some application programs that came with the system initially unless they are on the manufacturers site and can be downloaded.

Michelle you will need a windows xp cd in order to boot from and then there are some utilities that can be run to fix your boot problem. Your boot file is corrupted and needs to be repaired/replaced.

The guys at www.generalsystemsconsulting.com helped me solve these types of problems. They are real economical and fast too.

Toshiba tecra p5 up on black Screen on PCI EXPRESS ERROR can't boot????

If you can't boot to the bios, you are in major trouble. You can try and see if the manufacturer has a bios flash program you can load on a Flash drive to flash the bios...you will have to research that on another computer, obviously.

Laptop boots up then screen goes black with a flashing white dash in top left cornor and nothing else happens

Wow, that dash usually means:
  • there is no hard drive, or
  • operating system or
  • key files in windows are corrupted or
  • your disk has been damaged or has a mechanical failure.

If your computer takes 25-30 minutes to boot up, you have obvious windows or hard drive errors or corrupt data.

You can check this hint on disk errors but my guess is you have lost your disk and all the data. You might be able to put the disk into a second computer and retrieve some data.

I do this for fun and feed back, not $$$$

I have a packard bell nav50/DOT S2. I wont boot properly. Most of the time it turns on, the possessor kicks in for a bit then stop, nothing on the screen at all. Sometimes it boots with the PB BIOS...

Download and burn a copy of memtest86+ to CD and then boot from that CD and it should automatically start the test program. If you have a bad memory it will be immediately obvious on the screen.

I need to flash my bios and i downloaded them on to a blank thumb drive and i am not sure what to do since i am displaying acer black screen and i dont know how to boot it

This is a pretty brave move if you haven't done this before and don't have access to detailed instructions as incorrectly flashing the bios can cause huge problems and make your laptop into a rather large and expensive paperweight so please be aware of the ramifications before you go any further.

I'm guessing that the updated bios files you've downloaded are in an ISO format in order for them to be "bootable" which would suggest that you need to change the boot sequence in the bios so that your thumb drive is the primary boot device and then reboot with the drive in place. Sorry I can't be of more help but Google is your friend. Good luck.

Black screen

That means the Windows "Shell" or Explorer.exe is failing to load. You will have to wipe and reinstall your windows. If you have important data, I suggest you take your machine to a pc shop and have them attempt data recovery.
