Singer 404 sewing machine

I purchased a used singer 404 and am trying to get it working for my wife. I put new thread in the bobin and have everything threaded correctly but when I try to sew something, the stitches don't lock or sometimes it will work for a few stitches and then not work. Help would be appreciated.

I would first make sure the thread tension is adjusted properly. if this does not fix your issue, check the point on the shuttle hook and make sure it is not broken off. it should come to a needle sharp point. if the tip is broken off it may not pick up the thread from the needle properly. then double check the timing and the needle shaft depth. first, make sure your needle is fully seated and tightened down. the groove in the needle should face forward. there are two timing marks on the needle shaft. at maximum depth you should see both lines and the top line should be right at the bottom of the needle shaft bushing. then as the shaft goes back up, when the bottom line is at the bottom of the bushing the point of the shuttle hook should be right behind the needle and centered in the indentation on the back of the needle. you may need to make minor adjustments on the needle shaft depth depending on what brand and type of needles you are using.

I took out the bobin case and now when I put it back in it wont stay. The thread bunches up or the bobin case comes out of place. Any idea on how to get it to stay put?

The manual usually shows a pretty good diagram of how it should be, it snaps in place. Call singer at 1-800-4singer. Or go online at singerco.com and download a manual for free,

Model 8280. The thread on the bottom keeps bunching up. It is a horrible mass of thread. Then, it stops moving. Can you help me?

I had the same problem and I tried everything including removing the bobin case, cleaning out lint, changing the needle, adjusting the tension but it did not work. Then I finally tried reloading the bobin thread, making sure to load the bobin according the manual directions....and the problem was solved...no more tangles... just a nice even stitch...yeah!

Thread bunches from the bottom while sewing.

Hello, sewing is a part of my income and I've encountered this problem before and managed to fix it on my own, by trying out these different things. I re-threaded the machine and checked to make sure that the tension is not too loose. Check the bobin and the sack the bobin fits into, sometimes it comes loose too, click it back into place and re-do the bobin. adjust the tightness of the stiitches, I usually put it on 2 .5 - 3. Hope this helps. Good luck to all. Nefishakh@hotmail.com

I have model 8280 and the bobbin thread keeps bunching up on the bottom. I have tried to rethread it but it keeps happening.

i think your putting in your bobin backwards,
to check put your bobin in and hold bobin , and bobin case by thread if it unrolls its backwards,
hope this helps!!

MY machine has never worked perfet liked I hoped it would. When I embroider the top thread ends up all lose and

This could be caused by many things but I would suggest that you take the machine to your local dealer for them to have a look at as the bobbin case may be the problem and they may have to replace it. If you look at the bobbin case it should be smooth all the way around - if there's rough edges then that could cause a problem. Also if the bobbin case jumps out of the socket then this is a good indication that you need to have it replaced.

I can't find my manual and cn not get the bobbin to thread correctly

you need to insert the bobbin so that when the thread pulls off it spins counter clockwise. on the side closest to you there is a notch that you slip the thread into and then pull along the side towards the back of the machine staying on the left. once you've done that you can manually turn the knob on the side to make the needle cycle down so that the upper thread will pull up the bobbin thread.
