My tv is starting to show a grid about 3 boxes wide and 3 boxes deep on screen. Sometimes it is white, sometimes green, and sometimes red. Also the colors are starting to fade in and out. Any suggestions

You have a defective light engine and you do not have to be under warranty for Hitachi to replace this part. We just went through this and here's what you need to do. Call Hitachi's customer relations department at 800-654-7013 and tell them that you have a defective light engine. They will act like they've never heard of this problem but they have. They will give you the names of some certified dealers in your area to call. Once a tech comes out and confirms that it's the light engine, call Hitachi back and they will send a brand new light engine to the dealer and Hitachi will cover the cost of the part (cost $1500).
Here is the deal, if you're under warranty, Hitachi will cover the part and the install. If you're not under warranty, all you pay is the install. Our install cost $400. Others on this site have paid $200. Do not let anyone tell you that you have to pay for the light engine part...you do not. Hitachi has not recalled this part but they are replacing it for free. Also, deal only with Hitachi customer realations number that I listed. Good Luck

The blue button is not for magic focus on this model----the front grill beneath the screen can be removed and behind it is an inspection plate---the tiny blue button is at the front and to the left and with set on and it pressed the set will enter the decam mode----a grid of lines will show and then buttons on the original remote do different things to adjust convergence and then save the adjustments.
I convergence is way off don't try to adjust it as it will only make matters worse---usually the two chips need to be replaced and sometimes a resistor as well.

To answer your concern, all you have to do is to change the setting of your aspect ratio on your TV.
Here is my suggested way to procede:
1. Apply 1080i signal, which should produce an oversized HD image on ColorStream1or 2. 2. Select an HD channel that is broadcasting standard 4:3 image, not wide screen. 3. Switch to the Service Mode ( Please refer to the above links). In the Service mode, press channel up/down to find the Adjustment parameters needed for the following steps.
4. Adjust HIT with volume up/down control for the image height to 22.5 inches.
6. Adjust WID for image width of 30 inches, (22.5*4/3) 7. Adjust HPOS to center the image. 8. Adjust PARA and TRAP to minimize geometric distortion. 9. Switch into Convergence mode and Adjust VLIN to get equally spaced horizontal grid lines. 10. Measure the length of the central grid lines and note the number of horizontal and vertical grid lines. This information is used to create an overlay grid. 11. Create the overlay grid on 40x25 x0.003 inch clear Acetate sheet, which you can get at the Art Supply store for under $2. Draw the grid with a fine line erasable pen. Draw vertical and horizontal lines through the center of the sheet so that the lengths are the same as the central grid lines. Now draw the grid so that it has the same number of lines as the convergence grid but are equally spaced, with the outer ones at the ends of the central lines. 12. Cut off about 1/4 inch from the right side of the sheet so that the sheet can lay flat against the screen, which is slightly less than 40 inches. 13. Put a reference mark on the TV frame 2.5 inches down from the upper left side of the screen. 14. Place the overlay on the screen so that the upper edge lines up with the reference mark. The overlay sticks by electrostatic attraction. 15. Use convergence controls to remove grid distortion and converge grid colors. Refer to the Anamorphic link for details. 16. Enjoy 1080i.
Other Comments: I didn't realize I could create the overlay grid before placing the Acetate sheet on the TV screen, until I finished drawing the grid with the sheet placed on the screen. I added grid lines as called for in the procedure. I'm sure this method took much longer no only to draw the lines but some of them were difficult to see.
Part way through the convergence procedure, I became concerned that the image width was off since I did my screen adjustment with wide screen image. Thus, I decided to repeat that step with a 4:3 screen.
I confirmed the need to press 7 often to save results since after I adjusted one grid color without it, I accidentally hit a key that switched me out of convergence mode and when I switched back, all settings were gone.
Another mistake I made was not realizing that the cursor color determines which grid gets moved.
Hi, It's a convergence issue. Go into the main TV menu under video settings and look for convergence. If it has an auto convergence select that and wait a minute the TV will adjust itself and give you a clear picture. If the TV does not have an auto convergence and just regular convergence than select this. It will give you a grid pattern on your TV and you have to move the coursor (using TV remote) and adjust each "point" so that each line is perfectly white. If you notice red or blue anywhere on that "line" then you have to adjust using the up, down, left and right arrow keys to "line up the red and blue lines with the nearest white line. It takes time and patience to do, but when completed, all lines on the grid pattern should be pure white and you will have a great looking picture. You have to do this will all TV inputs (Video1, Video2 and so on) the reason Zoom looks good, is because you never used that screen as much and so the lenses didn't have a chance to get out of syncs. RPTV's are made of the three lenses (red, Blue and Green) and as you watch TV, these lenses slowly get out of alignment. So you should do a convergence about twice a year to make sure nothing is out of whack. Good luck...
This sounds like the alignment of the red beam is off. There is usually a configuration tool in the menu that shows a white cross in the center of your TV against a black backgound (if it's aligned properly). It's a combination of the red, blue and green light bars hitting the screen. You should be able to adjust the positions of these crosshairs for each of the colors and "fine tune" your picture. Some of the higher end TV's even do a grid with over 100 crosshairs to fine tune every few inches or so. Once you get the red beam in line with the others and save the settings you should be good to go!
I take it this is a projection TV. so they use three lensed CRTs red green and blue. you should have a setup screen that projects a grid pattern. red green and blue. there is SOMEWHERE a adjustment that overlaps the three projected grid patterns. Making a WHITE single grid pattern. red green and blue make white light. Pin cushioning is the bowing. you may find a POT to adjust on the back of the set. I have no idea what set you have. Lastly.. Pin cushioning can also be caused by faulty flyback transformers. Hope I could help.. new here LOL Happy Fixing =)
a green screen on power up with retrace lines. At shut down a point appears in the middle of the screen.
Sounds like either a shorted G2 grid, or bad flyback. If a phospher flake has shorted the grid in the tube, you can sometimes have luck by using a megger set at 1000VDC, to burn away the short.
This is usually caused by the line HV going too high causing the anti-UV protection to kick in so fit a dummy load 40W lamp instead to the line output to allow measurements to be made.
you have a defect in the tube. the green gun has a low emission problem. sometimes you can correct it by running the heater grid above ground. also when it goes green try tapping the front of the tube with a scredriver very gently, carbon build up on the guns can short it to the heater grid.
