I have the same problem...it just arose this past week. Two weeks ago I did not have any problems...now when I try and turn on the flash, I just get the hour glass. IF you find a solution, please post.

Mine's stuck on the "hourglass", too, unless I have it set to NO FLASH. I don't have a cable to connect to my PC, as one user suggested. Help!

The camera is loading as long as any flash is selected. THe only time the camera will not do this is when the camera is set to "off". I thought maybe I had a battery problem, so I completely depleted the battery and recharged. Still have the same problem

I found a way to fix this. I used my USB cable, hooked it up to my PC, then powered up the camera. I then selected flash. It took about a minute, but it worked. Now when it is unplugged the flash is working again

Flash stuck

It sounds like the flash up switch is stuck closed so that even though the flash is down the camera thinks it is up.
Slide a business card under the left side (the rewind side if you are old enough to remember film cameras) of the flash when it is down to free the latch and remove the two screws on the bottom of the flash so you can pop off the cover. You can then see the switch on the release side of the flash at the pivot. The flash up switch contact that looks like a crooked finger should be above the post. Gently reposition it and check the action of the switch by manually freeing the latch.
Be very careful. There may be over 300 volts across the two wires that are soldered to the flash tube. If you touch them you will get a nasty shock.

I am getting this message on my EOS 450d, (camera's built in flash pop up was obstructed turn the power switch to off and on again). I have done this several times the flash wont pop up - can you please...

Sometimes the pop-up flash on the EOS range of cameras can get stuck. The EOS family have a very tiny micro switch under one blade of the flash hot-shoe.

Get a toothpick and manually pop the switch. It should clear your error, too.

Good Luck.

The CCD is bad or the Iris is shut stuck. If it's the Iris just stuck, it might just have moisture - leave the camera in a dry place for a day. If it's the CCD - pretty much "kiss-it-good-bye". To replace the CCD is expensive - get a new camera.

Problem with slr camera flash obstruction

The problem is in the flash pop up switch. It is probably jammed in or there is some kind of substance on it causing it to stick. You can find it by manually popping up your flash. You should then see a little black spring loaded post on the release button side of the flash. Check to see that it is not stuck in in any way. If so that is why you are getting error 5. To repair you can try a qtip an a little rubbing alcohol. Otherwise you will need a technician to do it.

My Fun! Flash 640 does not power on.

Check to see that the On/Off switch is in the On position. Check to see that the green power light on the back of the camera is lit. If it is not lit, make sure that the batteries are loaded properly. If necessary, insert fresh batteries and try again.
