Delete the printer from the list of available printers on your computer. But first make sure you have the software needed to reinstall it, either on the original CD or as a download from the manufacturer's site. Then turn the printer off or disconnect it, go into Control Panel, Printers/Faxes in Windows, highlight the printer that's not working and press the Delete key on your keyboard or right click and choose Delete. When you reconnect the printer, Windows should detect it automatically and ask you for that CD or the location where you unzipped/expanded the file you downloaded from the manufacturer.

before reading your wonderfully thorough response. a technician surprisingly returned my call within 10 minutes of my original call. his first suggestion was to shut down the printer from the interior power switch - i had no clue this was there. within 3 minutes i was back up and running. thank you for your response!
