when taking a picture only the bottom half of the picture takes and an icon comes on saying to press the shutter release button again

May be a weak subject to focus or the flash is not ready when you press the button.
Set the camera to auto(green) mode.Try it with a contrast bright subject for as many time as possible.
If the problem persists turn off the camera and reset the camera using the button near usb connection.
Then go to seller for replacement.
