One of the burners stopped working all of a sudden while I was cooking. The red light is ON when I turn the knob, but the burner shows no reaction. Please help.

i was servicing my srove and i disconnected a cylinder shaped object from the actual gas hole inside the stove as i reconnected it i tryed to lite it but it gave me a huge flame...my problem is that i connected this cylinder firmly on to the gas hole..but then i tryed to raise this cylinder off directly the hole and it started working fine again i was wondering if it is safe to leave tis space between the cylinder and the hole......pleaseeeeeee help if not my mom would kill meeee.........
