Hitachi 43fwx20b convergence repair help needed

Our hitachi started having red convergence problems, then the blue seemed to be going too. whereas the kids thought it was cool to have a 3-D tv it was driving me crazy. the site here has been a fabulous help and between several different sources we decided to replace the stk's. so we ordered our parts and spent a few hours taking apart the tv and following the step by step instructions found here elsewhere, soldered it all back up and voila! it looked exactly the same as before :( the good news is we didnt blow up the tv and everything is still "working" but we still have the convergence problem. we have now gone and checked the resistors and i looks like two of them are bad..oops. so here's the question, did we mess up ? we are going to replace the resistors but will the new stk's have gone bad again that quickly? or should they be okay? if the new resistors don't fix the problem is there anything else to check or will it need to become a door stop? thanks in advance for any insight.

    Help.

I have a 43" Hitachi rear projection TV that has had the convergence go out (again!). Last time, the repair man said it was a common problem, replaced a part and charged $300. Three years later I have the same problem and don't want to spend another $300. Should I cut my losses and get a new set? If someone new where to get the part and could give me brief instructions on how to replace it, I would be appreciative. If I can't fix it, I will at least break it the rest of the way and deposit the remains in the parking lot of the store that sold it to me. Thanks!

I have the same set and it's only the red that seems to be bleeding left and only on some portions of an image - as in - NOT the convergence STK's...I replaced the STK's and checked all resistors on my board, all in spec, turned it on and tada - still minimal red color, except the weird blurr to the right on some parts.

I HAVE noticed a tiny red LED on beside the flyback switching regulator part number STRF6628 - is that normal? Could someone who owns one of these sets please be so kind as to let me know if they have a tiny red light that is illuminated under operation beside that part? All other LED's are green - something tells me that a red one is an indication something has created an error condition.

Good Day Johnny boy;

The red 'light' near the regulator is normal. It is an indication that a/c is present, the green light, led's, are DC voltages.

When the STK's go bad in this TV, the originals are STK392-110, the manufacture recommends that they are replaced by STK392-150's. The resistors are used to control the bias of the IC's the help shape the wave form for the convergence yoke. The resistors are very low ohm-age and it is very important to replace with correct values.
After replacing the IC's and still getting red image after adjustment/ magic focus, but you stated "weird blurr". Is the "blurr" flame like? Like from fire?? If so the TV's red tube is gassy or weak. Could try to rejuv, but could short life the tube.

Good Luck, hope this info was helpful, Big Irish.

In all probability, the resistors are effectively fuses and were "blown" when the original STKs went bad. Repalce the resistors and you should have your good picture back.

Thats usually caused by failed convergence ICs and the associated resistors. You can get the convergence repair kit from www.tvrepairworld.com they have most model kits available.

Hitachi 43fwx20b. Blue color will not reset in auto or manual focus. If it is convergence what and where do I need to look to locate them in the set?

the convergence is an automatic adjustment. if the auto isn't working after you tell it too from user menu, then the convergence amp is not working. this requires a tech or a good hobbiest. most of these amps are just ( stk's ) chips 3 in the unit you should replace all 3 making sire there is enough heatsink compound on them.

Hitachi 43fwx20b Convergence Problems

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

You can see some more examples and find a fix here

Red green blurr across left top corner

Go into the customer menu and select convergence; if red or blue are skewed and will not move in some direction one of the two Convergence chips this model 43fwx20B uses is bad.

This model is fairly easy to fix for this problem. It uses two of the STK-392-120 CHIPS. If you or someone you know can solder I can give you instructions for this model. You can buy a pair of the chips on Ebay for less than 14 dollars plus shipping.

Most of the time just the two chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted. If you want the instructions let me know and I will post them here.

Most shops will get 300 or more for this kind of repair---pretty close to the current resale value of this set. These are good sets and convergence is about the only problem they have---I have repaired hundreds of them with this problem. Once the chips etc are replaced the set should not have the problem again for 5-8 years---lifespan of the chips.

Picture has shadows with different colors (red, yellow, green)

Sounds like the convergence needs adjustment. You can do this through the menu-follow the on screen instructions. The idea is to line up the red, green, & blue.

43FWX20B. Convergence problem.

Look for hidden screws in the board... that's all I can say from experience. Plus, for the three red HV leads, Push down into the block and turn. This should release them if there is no other visible means of mechanical retention.

Convergence on top of screen and 3D bended lines (yellow & pink lines).

Hi,
It is failure of convergence out ICs causing 3-D type picture on screen, you need to replace two big ICs in convergence section on main board.
Click Part Store to see an image of IC as well as price info.

If you need service manual of 43FWX20B, let me know to provide you a copy.
Thanks.

The convergence Ics need replaced. In Hitachi, resistors and sometimes a coil needs replaced as well. The convergence/deflection PCB is available, but, the cost of that board is higher than having a servicer come to your home and repair the unit to component level. If you are not familar with this circuit, then call a servicer. Have them replace both ICs not just one. Make sure they are repairing to component level and not replacing the board. Hope this helps.
