I suggest you just restore to factory. There should be an option to do so when you first boot. A clean install is the safest route here.

You could TRY booting into 'safe' mode, too, using F8, but I recommend a clean restore or install.

The taskbar is upside down and at the top of the screen

On Windows computers, you should have what is known as the taskbar. This is the gray strip that runs across the bottom of your computer and which displays icons for quickly accessing programs you frequently use. The taskbar also shows the "Start" menu, clock and icons for your Internet connections. Sometimes icons do not appear properly in the taskbar. This usually is because the computer is new and hasn't had icons placed in the taskbar manually, or because a default setting is off in the OS properties. Both are simple fixes.

1.Right-click the "Start" icon and select "Properties."

2.Select the "Taskbar" tab in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue box.

3.Uncheck "Lock the taskbar" and "Auto-hide the taskbar." Check "Show Quick Launch." Since the Quick Launch box isn't available in some systems, you may need to right-click on the taskbar area, choose "Toolbars" and then select "Quick Launch."

4.Navigate to the programs you want to show on the taskbar through the "Start" menu or on your desktop. Right-click the program and drag it to the taskbar. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the menu that appears. The icon for the program should appear in the taskbar.

My note book starts too much slowly and mostly stucks it takes about 2 or 3 min to the starting window screen and 2 min in the welcome screen. kindly tell me the solution

Hi,

It might be due to Virus. So please use a anti-virus software and try scanning the virus

To my knowledge , if you have just updated , you should be OK , MS say they have have fixed all their faulty patches .

Did you download all the security fixes ?

Here are some other things to try .

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:

Click on Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools then Services.
Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service.
Disable it, apply the changes & reboot.

Or if you don't want to disable it .

Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Uses idle network bandwidth to transfer data. For the majority of Users this feature should be of little use & as such I'd recommend setting it to Manual. Those on highly active Networks may benefit from having this set to Automatic, although it may be worth testing out to see if it does.

• Defragment boot files
The boot defragment option is usually enabled by default, but it may be disabled, or not properly enabled. If it's not working, XP may boot dog-slow.
To enable it:
- Edit HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction, find the string called Enable. If the string value is set to N, change it to Y.

Enable Quick post in BIOS setup , as long as you have a have a lot of memory .
The normal memory test , is tested three times & that alone may take 60 to 90 seconds.

Disable the Windows XP Prefetcher
Windows XP has a Prefetcher component, which shortens the amount of time it takes to start
Windows and programs. When trouble shooting either Windows or program start-up issues, it might
be helpful to disable the prefetcher, because it runs as a background service while other
applications are running or loading.

To disable the prefetcher:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SessionManager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters
Double-click the EnablePrefetcher value (remember the value that EnablePrefetcher is set to!)
Change the Value data to 0 to disable the prefetcher .
Close the registry editor and reboot the computer for the changes to take effect
When done troubleshooting, you can re-enable the prefetcher by changing the Value data to its
original value.

Values for EnablePrefetcher are:

0 - no prefetch
1 - prefetch applications only
2 - prefetch boot only
3 - prefetch both applications & boot (default)
I find 5 is best .

THANKS......
WITH REGARDS........

Hard drive crash, not usable at all; downloaded xp drivers and computer drivers but cannot get them installed. Hard drive not recognized.

When you install a new harddrive, it has no Operating System on it.
Windows XP and Windows Vista, are examples of an Operating System.

Each laptop manufacturer, has their own system of changing a laptop harddrive. Some allow you to press a key or two, to put the laptop in a state where it will save the basic Operating System files, and when you install the new harddrive, it will transfer them over to it.

Some laptop manufacturers do have this option.

You either have to take the harddrive out, install it into an external enclosure for a harddrive, (Uses a USB cable) Then attach the external enclosure via the USB cable, to another computer, and use a 'mirror' imaging program to save the Operating System to that computer.

Then the new harddrive is installed in that external enclosure, and the Operating System is 'mirrored' over to it.

Just information for you, as you cannot do this now with a crashed harddrive.
Your option now, is to buy a genuine copy of the Operating System you had on the laptop, and install it.
Not what you wanted to hear, huh?

You need to buy whatever version of Windows XP it had, (WinXP Home or WinXP Pro), or Windows Vista.
If it was Windows Vista, I suggest getting at least the Windows Vista Home Premium version.

I personally prefer Xp over Vista.
Tigerdirect.com, and Newegg.com, have these.
Look for Software>Operating Systems.

OR, you can simply put Ubuntu Linux on it for free.

Cleaning virus and malware found memory infected

I think it was a case of a slide-in cd drive not fully making contact that must have caused the white screen. I have cleaned the laptop and am returning it to my friend. It had an unverified version of winxp, and I am recommending that they pay for a legit os if they intend to continue to use it. It has only a 10g hdd so it might be better to get a bigger one and upgrade the unit. They will probably just use stick drives for data.
Thanks for your useful site. I have other issues with computers I get in the trash while trying to salvage them. I am setting up a learning center at an area nursing home and getting residents into learning how to use computers since they have a lot of time to learn, if they will.

Laptop won' boot up.

The blue screen means the system is experiencing a fatal error... a error from which it cant recover.... so while booting press f8 and boot using safe mode... then analyse the startup programs of your system using Start->Run and then typing msconfig in the window that appears and then going to the startup tab... one of your latest installed program might be misfunctioning....

HP Compac NX5000 wont load XP Home on new hard drive

This situation leads me to believe that the CD or DVD drive is faulty,,or the install disc you are using is scratched or dirty.
Try cleaning the disc and begin again.
Another option is to take the hard drive out and using a 2.5 to 3.5 inch HD adapter ,,plug into a desktop PC as a slave.
And copy your WinXp cd onto a partition on your laptop HD.
Then using a Win98Se floppy boot disc you can access the winXP and install from there.
