Question about LaCie Silverscreen 80GB USB 2.0 - Portable Multimedia (093053682095) Hard Drive

2 Answers

Lacie silverscreen just bought this thing, love it. copied a number of movies to it, some divx, some xvid's, most of them play great, some not at all. all show up on PC in menu, but not on TV. cannot seem to figure out why, checked codec's on non working one's, they are divx & xvid's as well, cant seem to pinpoint why they dont work while others do. interesting side note: the text of the non-working files show up BLUE in the movie folder while the ones that work are BLACK. never fails. dont know if it means something or not, but i have searched all over incl. calling lacie for help, no one can tell me why some work, why some dont. just looking for a failsafe way to convert files so they work everytime. please help!!

i downloaded a bunch from various P2P sites, friends, my own dvdrips. i dont think it's licensing because my disney movies for example all came from one dvd, some work, some dont. read the thread of the "wont show up on my tv" problem which is similar, but im using the AUX jack on my monitor which shouldnt cause any issues.

Did these movies come from licensed sources, by chance? You may be running into a simple issue of licenses not transfering from your HD/computer to the storage unit.

HOW DO I USE THE USB PORT TO PLAY MOVIES

Tom,

To be able to play movies stored on a USB device (it doesn´t matter if it's a usb pen, a usb hard drive, etc), you will need two things:

1.- The device where you want to play the movies must support the USB device that you're using (not all USBs are the same, and they can be formatted differently, too). So if when you plug it in, the TV doesn´t recognize it, use a different USB device.

2.- The movies that you put on the USB device must be palyable by your device. ie: your TV, BluRay, etc must be able to decode and play the movie format, and this can be AVI, DIVX, XVID, H624, QT, MKV, etc. Even if your device reproduces DIVX movies, if the movie is encoded in a weird format, it won't be playable. The fastest way to know is trial and error.

I have a WD 1tb external hard drive that is a few months old. I use it mostly for storing video footage of holidays, movies from friends and family or downloaded, pictures and tv shows that I have...

Try copying one episode of your tv shows to your computer's internal hard drive (lets say put it on your desktop) and see if it is the same result. By the way, what is the extension of those tv show files? are they avi, mp4 or mkv? Are the extension of the those files the same with your movie files? Normally, movie files are avi ( divx or xvid) which can be easily played by wndws media player or vlc. If it plays after copying one to your internal hard drive, then erase the one from your WD and recopy it from your internal hard drive. If that works, then just do the same on the othe tv show files. If it still the same result after copying onto your desktop, then just uninstall and reinstall vlc/divx and the codecs. Let me know if these procedures works.

Not all DVD-players support DivX encoding of movies.
Check that your DVD-player does support DivX.

Deleted 4 folders for lacie silverscreen 500gb

Dead easy, simply attached the SScreen to your PC/Mac and create the four folders:
"Movies"
"Pictures"
"Firmware"
"Music"

It requires these four folders to boot the OS!

LaCie silverscreen Utilities CD-ROM

The OS is hidden in memory, you can clear all files off the machine and it will still work.

The only requirements are the 4 folders:
Firmware
Movies
Music
Pictures

That's it!

New firmware can be found at www.lacie.com

I reccomend connecting you computer directly to your tv, depending on which mac you have. DVI or vga. I'm sure the manufacterer does as well. The files maybe in a codec your tv does not compute.
