My tv displays "format not supported"

Too many variables with what you are describing here. How old is the TV and how old is the DVD player. Did you verify that the components were all plugged in to their corresponding colors....blue to blue, red to red, green to green. Is the RGB cable verified good. Another common mistake is to plug the video jacks into ex. VID 1 while the Audio is on VID 2. Make sure they are on the same numbered input and that the TV is on the input your jacks are in. The HDMI may not work because there are three different HDMI types and not all play well with each other. The problem can be fixed with an HDMI converter but gets into more cost. Eliminate above mentioned and repost. I would be glad to troubleshoot you through this.

I can't use the vcr on my tv, only the dvd player.

Most vcr's should have an line output or coaxial output. If you hook it up to the turner on the tv, then you have to use channel 3 or 4. If you use the input go to vid 1 or vid 2 or whatever it says on the input.

No sound when playing a tape in the rca vcr player

If it's connected with a scart cable, then there may be a bent pin or broken wire.

I have a JVC television that has a vid 1 and vid 2 input slots. vid 1 is ran to my dvr, but vid 2 will not recogonize my playstation or my dvr. so i have lost the ability to play games on this tv. any...

I do not have that particular TV so I cannot be overly specific, but you should look for the menu option. There should to be a selection where you can enable your Video 2 input.

Connecting and recording sony hdtv, rdr-hx780 recorder, sony dream system

I have the same system, except for the TV, I have a project (that part doesn't matter).

From your Sat. go straight to your AV receiver
Again from you Sat. (all of the AV outputs are all live), go out from either 1 or 2 and go to your recorder Line 1 in.
From you AV receiver go to your TV.

All you have to do is hit record and you will record whichever channel you are on. I am having difficulty getting it set up as a PVR, but will figure it out sooner or later.

Hope this helped.

Just got a new LG 42 " tv have hooked up video and it will play tapes but not able to record for some reason. Scart to Scart connection from vid to AV 1 on tv.

Scart is not always two-way, if that is the way you have hooked it up. A lot of newer appliances have one-way scart connectors, and the vid/av plugs are also wired in one direction.
Are you trying to record from the bult-in tuner to the video? Then you would also have to wire from the av-out of the TV to the video in on the video/dvd... essentially doubling up on the cables.

Hitachi ultravision 50v500

there should be 3 sets of video rca jacks on tv or receiver they might have put them on the wrong rca jack in which they just need to be moved over
usually the 3rd set of rca jacks are component jacks not for tv or video but for low output signals say like cameras and only one set of rca's can be used at a time svg on one of them rca's will over power the vid's. so have no picture
