I have several game gears and battery packs with problems
The first game gear my parents got brand new when I was 7. And the game gear and its battery pack has major problems. I have a second game gear with problems and more battery packs with problems. I also have 2 game gears that only work by putting fresh batteryies in the back. My point is how and where can I get these problems fixed.

The battery compartments were notorious for getting broke. I have fixed a couple. The contacts would get rusty and sometimes harm the mainboard. go to www.benheck.com and look on there forums. They will probably have detailed instructions there.

Make sure the connections were the batteries hit on each side on the game gear..are not corroded..or rusty.take a piece of sand paper to them ..to be sure..also try other batteries.. if still no power up. Would be the switch..
try 0-0-0-0, 1-2-3-4, 4-3-2-1 and so on... for the most part, that console is geared towards underage users....... my daughter has one collecting dust somewhere. shes into her mini laptop running the new splashtop os... instead of windows 7....
this could be several problems one the game system is dirty it may just need to be cleaned or maybe the system is completely fried from getting wet may be from rain or moist area if that is the case its done for.
Your laser lens is going out and needs replacement. Either replace the whole drive (but switch out your old circuit board into the new drive) or buy a new laser and install it in (model number is etched into the bottom of the laser).
You have to switch your old board out of the old drive into the new due to Microsoft having "Keys" locked into each drive so you cant fix your system easily. So remember to keep the boards seperate and switch the old board into the new drive and install the new drice... should fix it nicely.
it sounds like the game gear is breaking down. i wouldn't bother repairing it as i have owned one previously and the repairman said it would cost me £30 - £40 to have it repaired and my game gear had the same problems as yours. you can replace it as there are loads of game gears to choose from on ebay.co.uk - just type game gear on search in all categories and a huge list comes up. i bought one from there a few days ago and it cost me £8.49 and that included 4 games! i hope this helps.
try adjusting the brightness knob on the system. i once had that same problem with mine. The ccfl tube (the main battery drain problem in most portables) might be burnt out or something. You can replace it with LED's i think.
