Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Loud grinding, spinning noise with game in console.

Hi, just lastnight I went to play Lost Odyssey and after I closed the drive it began to let out a loud grinding noise, like the game disc wasn't being held in place. I put in a dvd movie and it loaded with no problems at all. I then tried 3 different games and the system made the same bad noise trying to load each. It did eventually load Lost Odyssey and seemed to quiet down after a minute but then I took it out and put it back in and same noises plus the "please put in 360 console" message came up. Before these events it had been playing just fine. I am still under warranty and can send to Microsoft for repairs but would like to keep my own system if possible. BTW it is an Xbox 360 Elite. Any help would be appreciated.

My XBOX 360 Elite starting doing this too after playing Twighlight - DVD. It grinds and sees any disc as a DVD. Sometimes it will play and sometimes it won't play. Sometimes it recognizes a game and sometimes it doesn't. It is very frustrating. I've tried everything suggested such as removing the magnet washer and super gluing it to the drive spindle. I've tried lubricating the motor on the disc drive. Now I am trying to insert a dime sized shim on the little white plastic piece that holds the laser to the spiral shaft that moves the laser. It seems as though these drives have an issue with wearing out because the plastic grooves wear down. I don't know where to buy this piece by itself so I'm trying to fix it myself. If all else fails I will buy a new XBOX 360 Elite and then return my old one and get my money back since mine just ran out of warranty in January 09. I feel your pain dude.

Even if it is still playing dvds it might be the dvd-rom drive, usally it spins a game faster than a dvd. Or it could be the harddrive if it was trying to save something. try to download a demo or something to check the hard drive.

Disc Grinding, Not Motor or Magnet Thing

I think the only option for you is buy a replacement drive off ebay (you want the same model doesnt matter about the FW version) swap the PCB of the drives over so the new one has your old PCB. The same thing happened to me but when I lubed the spindle the grinding noise went away for a week at a time, so I got fed up of constantly lubing it and bought a new one off ebay and swapped the PCB worked brilliant ever since. Hope this helps.

Try jacking your vehicle up and turning the tires. listen for any odd noise like a grinding sound, wheels hubs have been known to make a grinding noise when they go bad.

My psp makes a loud whirring noise

Hmmm... well i think its because its thea game or something or that you need to clean the PSP because when you open the UMD drive dust could fly in there or the UMDs might have dust inside and attract more dust but your able to play games right?

From what i understand, the dvd drive can spin wonky allowing the disks to foul and cause large scratches
