Question about Computers & Internet

I own a Gateway laptop computer and the power button was accidentally mashed in by my daughter over the weekend.....After trying to mess with it and trying to push it back up to a normal position, the button completely broke off and fell into the hole where it's supposed to be located. I managed to get it out of there, but now my computer will not turn on at all.....Before it broke completely off and although it was all wigley inside, I could push the button and the computer would power up, but after it broke off, I cannot seem to turn the computer on with anything. As you can imagine, there is just an open hole where the power button should be now....Do you have any idea how I could power up the computer other than using the power button? And is it extremely difficult to fix something like this? And what would the costs be?

What mdel is it? Gateway is notorious for problems with their power buttons even after they fix them their selves. Firstly, if it's under warranty or extended warranty through another provider definitely have it repaired. To get it to power up you can try this: Unplug the ac adaptor snd gently turn it over. Slide the lock on the battery to the unlocked position. Then, while holding your hand underneath the battery so it won't drop, slide the release for the battery. Aftery is out, put the battery back in and slide the lock to the locked position. Then plug in the ac adaptor. If it does power up, watch for any changes with the disply i.e. dimmer picture, color changes etc. Unless you've worked on laptops for years I would not attempt it myself. It can be tough to dignose if you don't know what you're doing. As far as repair goes, most places charge anywhere from $50 - $100 to look at it and tell you what's wrong but if you have them fix it that money goes toward the repair cost. Shop around. I found one for $35. At least you know if it's worth fixing. If it's just a dc oower jack and a power button probably around $200. But if it's main board it's big bucks. All depends on the model and the parts. Just like a car. Hope this helped but you need that power button fixed at least. Any other questions just add a comment and I'll be glad to help.

Hi,

I,m afraid you can,t power up the computer any other way.
Laptop power buttons, have a make/break connection. Some power several items at the same time. You,ll need to buy a replacement Switch or switch panel, with the pwr switch on it.

If you give me the Laptop Make/Model.
I,ll search for the part for you.

Gateway computer power light flashes before booting up.

Hmm. I wouldn't have thought it had anything to do with pressing the button. It sounds more like a failing power supply or lack of current for startup. Did you make sure you plugged the power into the video card power connector (if it has one)? I know it worked ok at first but a heavier load can cause older or under-rated power supplies to fail soon after. Just a thought.

I accidentally pressed a button on my keyboard and now my gateway desktop screen is a bluish green tint how do I fix it?

I do not think it was a button pushed on the keyboard. Check monitor connections making sure that they are connected correctly. It may be a video card matter. Power computer down as well and push in the power button 1-2 seconds. Then power back up computer and see if this fixes this. If not check cables and do repairs as needed in a shop if your not that experienced with computers. John

MASH THE BUTTON AND ONLY THE FAN COMES ON AND IT STAYS ON.NO LIGHT COME ON THE COMPUTER,NOTHING WORKS BUT THE FAN

IT LOOKS LIKE YOU MASHED THE CAPS LOCK BUTTON ALSO. I FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR COMPUTER. LOL!

It is a little misleading but frequently a failing power supply will still have enough power to spin the fan and turn on the lights.

A computer store should be able to replace it for you. Considering your "MASHING" approach to to this problem I highly recommend this approach.

However, if you are comfortable with a screw driver you can replace it yourself. The key is making sure the new power supply has all of the same connectors and equal or greater wattage. The more wattage the better, especially if you have added a 2nd hard drive or a powered video card) Google "replace power supply" and you will find all the help you need. I recommend NewEgg.com for finding the correct PS and the best price.

PLEASE VOTE FOR MY SOLUTION IF IT HELPS :)

Yup. it is possible your hard drive is messed up but have you tried to check you memory card? Try to clean it using a clean cloth, rub the pins, and also blow the memory slots. Video card can may also be the cause. Just do same step as memory card.

Gateway computer does not turn on

Without seeing the machine, I'm thinking you have a motherboard problem. But try these troubleshooting steps before throwing in the towell:
Open the case and disconnect the CD cable. Now try it. If it still doesn't work, disconnect the hard drive and try it.
Let me know what happens. I've seen CDs mess up a system like this. I many times will swap out the power supply, but I'm thinking with the lights flashing, its a more serious problem.

It sounds like you need to reinstall the driver for the Realtek network interface card (NIC). I recommend accessing the Gateway web site to find the model number of the laptop, and then download the driver for the Realtek NIC. This should restore the functionality.
