I get disk read error when I try to boot it up.

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2010

Hello elix0411 and thank you for your quick answer. I didn't think none should answer my question so therefore I didn''t specified so mush of my problem I did try to ask someone at Lenovo forum but none replied. I have tried to tap F8 when is switsh it on but I cant get that menu that I can chose safe mode. But I copy in the whole story that I posted at Lenovo, try to read the whole story to understand my problem. Thank you in advance if someone can help me fix the problem.
A month ago I got this message " A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" and the HDD started to sound very much. I bought a new HDD of 80Gb instead of the old one that only had 6Gb. I choosed to install WXP instead of W2K that was on the machine from the beginning.
I started the installation and make a partition of 80Gb and tried to install install XP on that but that was not a good idea, because then I got this message "disk read error". I started to look around on this forum and found some info that the partition that I boot machine from should not be over 40Gb so I restarted the installation and format the disk again and created a partition of 30Gb and the installation went very good.
After that it has been running for a couple of weeks and I have done all updates and even put in SP3 and did a lot of restarts of the machine and everything has gone good. But suddenly after a simple change I wanted to do in which network I want the machine to be in and I had to restart it I got the same message again when it try to boot up.
I have tried with the XP CD and choosed the repair thing and got in and saw that the partition marked C: is still there and everything else looks OK. Do anyone know what the problem can be?
I also add that I have looked in the bios that I can get to by press F1 when I start the mashine everything looks ok and I have also run every test on the mashine there with no problems find. I also ran a diagnosis test I got from Western Digtal because the HDD is that brand and it didn't find any errors.

Hi there, here are possible solutions to your issue

1. make sure first that your computer would be able to identify your harddrive. you can check this one by going to the setup utility page. upon pushing the power button quickly tap the F1 key or F2 key. then check your Harddrive if motherboard was able to detect it.

2. make sure that there is now usb flash drive or external drive attached to your usb ports when booting up your computer. sometimes if you have this devices attached to your usb this error happens when booting up.

3. Power on the computer and keep on tapping F8 key the moment you push the power button. select safe mode once oyu enter the black screen. if same error occured. then, ou need to use the recovery disk that came with the system and restore the computer back to original factory settings.

SOURCE: not booting. "disk read error occurred"

This means you HDD is either corrupt or faulty, try downloading a copy of Hirens BCD to try to access the HDD (or use and external HDD enclosure) and if you can, put it back in the laptop, if not reformat it and reinstall windows.

The cd window indicate err. why

A disk read error is very common; it usually occurs as soon as your computer boots up from SSD, HDD or another hard drive and has affected a large number of users of Windows 10/8/7/XP.
This error has the message "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" on the screen like the picture below:
This message indicates that your hard drive has a problem when the operating system attempts to read the disk. That is, the disk is preventing the computer from entering into its operating systems.
Simply put, a disk error could be caused by several reasons such as incorrect boot order, BIOS issue, IDE cables failure, incorrect MBR configuration, faulty hard drive, etc.
When meeting such an issue, no matter how many times you restart your computer by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del" keys, this error still exists.
In the presence of this issue, it will still exist regardless of how many times you restart your computer by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del". In fact, a disk read error is not a problem that can be solved by a simple restart. But don't worry, this post will tell you top seven useful solutions to a disk read error occurred SSD.
How to Fix Disk Read Error Windows XP/7/8/10

Solution 1: Boot OS from Hard Drive

If a disk error occurred, the first thing to do is to check whether the boot order is correct in BIOS.
There are different ways to get into BIOS in different computer models and operating systems. When turning on the computer, the first boot screen will usually show you what key to press to go into the BIOS.
You can refer to this guidance How to Enter The BIOS On Your Computer. Once you are in BIOS, find the boot order section. In the boot order section, check to make sure the correct hard drive is placed as the first boot priority before any others in the listing.
Changing this setting might be enough to help your computer boot normally. If it is still unbootable, try the next solution to fix disk error occurred.

Solution 2: Reset or Upgrade BIOS

Resetting your computer BIOS to default or upgrading to the latest version might be able to solve "A disk read error occurred" in Windows XP/7/8/10.
Here is the step-by-step guide to reset BIOS:
  1. Press a specific key (F2, F8, F12, Esc or Del) according to your computer model and OS to enter into BIOS.
  2. Find the option to reset BIOS to default.
Tip: The option name is different depending on different computer manufacturers and BIOS versions, which can be "Load BIOS Defaults", "Load Default Settings", "Load Fail-Safe Defaults", "Load Setup Default" or "Get Default Values". Choose one according to the real case, then save this change.
If the disk read error on boot up persists, try the following solution.

Solution 3: Repair Master Boot Record and Boot Sector

A corrupted or damaged Master Boot Record or boot sector could cause disk errors. Therefore, repairing the MBR or boot sector might be able to fix the issue"A disk read error occurred" with USB boot.
You can use a professional and reliable partition and disk management tool - MiniTool Partition Wizard - to repair your MBR in Windows XP/7/8/10.
As a dedicated partition manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard could be used for many operations such as resize/move/extend/copy/wipe partition, rebuild MBR, migrate OS to SSD/HD, copy disk, recover lost partition, perform data recovery, and so on.
Here we strongly recommend MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional Ultimate Edition. This edition has a feature called "Bootable Media" based on Win-PE; it is designed to manage disks and partitions when the operating system fails to boot or when there is no operating system.

Intel D102GGc2 shows disk read error when detached sata dvd writer and xp boot when attached the same

Hi. if you're getting the same 'disk read error' when the DVD drive is attached and detached, then the error relates to the hard disk, that you're supposedly trying to install XP onto.
Ultimately you want the board to boot the DVD drive first. A quick change to the 'Boot priority' in the BIOS should sort it.

Disk read error

it is entirely possible that the boot sector is damaged. if this is the case you need to boot with the cd that came with the machine, or a recovery cd you've made, and load the recovery environment. once their load the command prompt. it should just be a button in vista or 7 and it will automatically load in xp. once loaded type "chkdsk c: /r" no quotes. let it run, this will check for bad sectors and should fix the issue. try and reboot, and let me know what happens. if you don't have the recovery cd's or installation media you can download msdart, which has the recovery console built in. i went ahead and uploaded msdart, download the version you think you need. https://rapidshare.com/files/2296685117/ERD50_x86_WinXP_SP3_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/2914560443/ERD60_x64_WinVista_SP2_blueforce.zip https://rapidshare.com/files/267688033/ERD60_x86_WinVista_SP2_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/1400985026/ERD65_x64_Win7_RTM_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/3314839442/ERD65_x86_Win7_RTM_blueforce.zip

UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME ERROR ON GATEWAY GM5045E WITHOUT RECOVERY OR WINDOWS XP DISC.

An unmountable boot volume error suggests that you may have a hard disk failure or at least some corruption to the hard disk which the system uses to boot Windows XP.
To try to resolve this problem you would need to use a specialist boot CD to try to repair the disk errors. One such disk is Hiren's Boot CD which can be downloaded as a CD image file (.ISO) then would need to be burnt on to a blank CD then the computer booted from this CD.
On the initial Hiren's boot menu, select DOS programs, then select Disk tools before selecting HDAT2 to perform the disk repair actions.
HDAT2 can take some time to complete depending on the size of your internal disk drive and the number of bad sectors or other errors encountered - the tool will attempt to repair bad sectors by reading, verifying, writing and re-reading / verifying the data.
If the disk can be recovered, then you may be lucky and the system will be able to boot but otherwise, you may still need to do some further recovery work for the operating system, in which case you may need a Windows install CD or other recovery CD media.

If HDAT2 finds a lot of unrecoverable errors then you should seriously consider replacing the drive - you should be able to recover data from the old drive using other tools on the Hiren's Boot CD, including booting the CD mini-XP environment and using the tools there too.

Disk read error when booting

when a "disk read error" occurs, it's most probably the disk that crashed. you can try and repair the disk by booting from a bootable cd or USB-stick with diagnostic functions, such as UBCD4win, which can be downloaded for free. UBCD has many functions to check disks for consistency. if this does not help you, then i'm afraid that you will have to replace the disk with a new one. however, it may still be possible to retrieve data from the disk, if you connect it to a pc using a usb-to-ata bridge. the program i use for data retrieval is file scavenger.

Dell b130 internal system restoration failed

Incase you don't have any thing important on the computer try a factory restore. This will wipe out everthing and make the cmputer like new. To start it power off the laptop. Power it on and hold down ctrl and tap f11 severl times at the Dell logo screen. Try this q couple of times as it may not work the first time. If this does nothing you'll need the os cd (xp cd) tO repair or reinstall windows.
