Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50K Digital Camera
I am looking out for an external flash for panasonic dmc-fz50. can i use flash of any other brands to go with the above camera?
I can't totally answer your question, but please look to the Olympus fl-36 OR metz 48 af-1--both are 100% compatible. The FL-36 is way less money than the pany equivalent--trust me its the same exact flash as the Pan FL360.. For a little more money, the metz is slightly more powerful, but you loose the "auto thrystor" feature. The oly is a lot smaller as well.
I have the FZ-50 and have used both flashes.

Okay, first off, Panasonic makes several external flash units that work with this camera. The FL360 seems to be the best buy, though at around $300 it is not exactly cheap. It has TTL and I am very happy with mine. I bought a cheap Sunpak to use with my older FZ30 but I think the voltage was too high, as it stopped working with the hotshoe. I would not recommend using any flash that is not rated to work with a digital camera. The problem is, almost all that are currently made are designed to work with specific camera models. So, the Panasonic flashes seem to be the way to go. There is also a FL500, which has a higher guide number, but it is close to $500.
Now, you don't necessarily need FL360s or even digital flashes to work with a slave unit. I have one I picked up at a camera store to use with my Sunpak as a second off camera flash. As long as you have a flash to trigger them (i.e. the built in flash, or something like the FL360) any flash with a slave trigger will work. One other possible solution is a device also made by Wein that allows you to use an older flash with a digital camera. It reduces the trigger voltage and prevents damage to the camera. I have one on order, not to use for that purpose, but because it also allows one to use a plug in flash with a camera that lacks the appropriate place to plug the flash in. I hope that helps.
