My LG DVD recorder is giving me the "Unknown disk error" problem. What to do??

  • Mattie13 Jun 04, 2008

My LG DVD Recorder (RH289H) displays an error "Unknown Disc. Please, check disc again." It still reads CD's. I think it is a laser problem. Only got it 6 months ago. Of course I can't find the receipt and can't imagine what the repairs will cost. Any solutions please.

I have been having the same problem with my LG DVD recorder.  I'm able to record, even play the recording a few times, and then suddenly I get an error message saying "unknown disc."  I've tried restarting multiple times, but keep getting the same message.  The first time it happened, I thought something was wrong with the disc.  After the second time, I figured it was the DVD recorder.  Any suggestions?

My LG RC797T only plays disks intermittantly and it's only 6 months old. I get the "unknown disk" error or the disk spins loudly and won't play. Then the player gets stuck and I can't power it off. I paid $300 at Best Buy and they recommended it over other brands - I fell for it. The warranty is only 90 days. I now see that A LOT of these LG's do this, all within a few months of use! I didn't know it was made in Korea or I would NEVER have purchased. It is junk - I never got to record on it and LG service says I have to pay $69 to have it repaired. I am extremely upset as it will likely happen again and I'll be paying yet again. After 1 year, you have to pay $69 + parts + shipping both ways. They do NOT stand behind their products and pretended they had never heard of this problem! I have called them many times and the only answer is to PAY the $69. Is there any way that I can fix the player myself to avoid giving them MORE MONEY for their crappy product?

We are having the same problem... Maybe we need to start a petition so LG will have to listen

I have same issue, did anyone try to contact LG? It is spitting out each and every disc, even discs recorded by itself. Very bad.

I have the same problem - LG DVD Recorder with 160gb hard drive - It will not play a single disc - proprietary movies or the ones it even recorded itself - Have tried umpteen laser lens cleaners to no avail - Machine itself is not that old. Have been forced to use the XBox to play DVD's for the kids since April - Verdict for you 'guys and gals' at the LG factory - piece of f#^king junk !! Would advise anyone NOT to buy it. Finally bit the bullet and bought a new Panasonic one today.

My husband and I have an LG DVD/VCR combo with the same problem... "Unknown Disk. Please check disk again".  I called the company and they were no help. My husband took the top of the player and cleaned the lens (blu ray glass) with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol.  That helped the quality of the photo but we still get the message.  Sometimes a disk will play and other times the same disk will be unknown.  It seems to work best when first started.  I'm going to try unplugging it to see if that resets it.  This player was rated the highest by Consumer Reports.  Obviously they didn't try it more than a month.  My husband says LG must stand for Low Grade.  I know we will never purchase anything with that brand again.

My LG LRh 790 will play CDs (burned and store bought), burned DVDs, but not store bought DVDs - really weird. Contacted LG and was told to clean the lens. Didn't work. Told to reset the unit. Didn't work. Seems to be a common problem that LG refuses to acknowledge. I plan on raising enough S#%T that they stop ignoring it. They HAVE to have record of this being a common problem, based on my research online.

Anyone know of any other solutions???

I also have the same probelm with my Zenith VCR/DVD recorder (which has the DVD manufactured by LG). It used to read data and audio CDs and erros out with DVDs (unknow disk error). Now the DVD drive deosn't read anything! I tried both disk and manual cleaners at no avail. Contatced tech support and was not helpful (other than sending for repair that would cost more than its orignal price).

    I have the same problem.

Solution is NEVER NEVER buy LG products again.

I bought a LG DVD RH1988 last year and 1 yr product guarantee period has just expired. This problem happened three times over the year and every time I had to take it back to LG technical repair centre for the disc rom replacement. Recently, same problem happened again as expected.

I have a RH266, and in the last 2 weeks it has also started with the fault of disk error or no video file no matter what DVD i put in the machine. My machine is 1 month out of warranty, I called LG and to their credit they have been helpful, they have told me they will pay 60% to the repair. The only problem with this is I can not find anyone who wants to repair it. I now have years 3-5 of my kids growing up on a machine that i can not get put onto DVD. From looking on web and seeing other forums this looks like a very common problem on LG machines in general. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY LG.

Unknown disc error, then sometimes works after 15th attempt. Had this player/recorder 2 years now.

  • bubs06 Apr 05, 2009

Same thing...I can't put any of my home videos onto a dvd...spent all that money and it has never worked great. "unknown disc" error and then spits out the disc. Doesn't somebody have something that will help!!!!

    Yes, me too.
I bought my LG DVD Player last year. And it was working fine, but only about 3 weeks ago was when it stuffed up. I usually watch burnt movies from a blank disc, and it always used to work but whenever I insert a disc it has "Disc Err" . I can't even watch a copyrighted movie nor listen to CD's because of this. Unbelievable, it's soo annoying! I also tried going on DivX. This is because my player is , i don't know somehow connected to DivX. so yes i did.. and i tried activating my account for the dvd player, and when I got the activation code onto a CD, i inserted it and all it said was "Disc Error" so what am I going to do with this ?

i think I'm going to stick to other comments of .. NEVER buying LG products again!

I have the same problem with my LG DVD player, with some discs saying disc error all of a sudden. I solved the problem by cleaning the lens of the laser very gently. The player must be opened to reach the lens. It is very important to get the plug off the mains so as no electricity supply is in the DVD player. The lens was cleaned by using a soft dry cotton bud (those used to clean the ears). NO solutions liquids etc. were used. Well, till now the problem has been solved. The lens was full of dust which come from the static of DVD's. The rest of the inside of the DVD was generally clean.

I finally had to send my player back to LG with a check for $69 to have the disc drive replaced. I will never buy one of their products again....

I had this problem and finding no answers simply decided to unplug the power and plug it back in. As a cable repair technician I have found this method will fix anything even a nuclear bomb.

It worked for me... For now.

To anyone with the blinking lights on an LG DVD Recorder, this is caused by dried out capacitors on the board, especially one which is 2200 mfd, if you look carefully at the capacitors, some will have a domed top, those are usually the ones that are dried out.

After warranty time expires (2yearsd) my LG LRY-517 DVD combo recorder/player start to make randomly disc reading errors. During half year things has going worse. Now the situation is that it does not play...

Use lens cleaner disk to run many times. It cleans the lens and also runs cd on the disk which eventually will get rid of moisture on the circuits and restore your dvd recorder on the LG unit.

DVD er Help

Broadcasting
Video : PAL I, B/G, I/ISECAM D/K, K1

That information is posted on LG Australia's
website that you hyperlinked to. It won't play
NTSC video because the region coding is
different - on PAL video is supported.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :P

Hope this helps,
